Jinef 2 Posted March 16, 2003 Bgnorway is right, the unit's fighting efficiency seriously depends on the area of operation. The 'special' forces in question however good they are at operating in their specialised enviroments will not be as good as units who operate in those conditions everday. The royal marines do a lot of training in Norway though and they say they try hard to get to the same standard as the Norwegian troops they are training with, however the regular Norwegian troops will probably not be going to a desert region right afterwards or to a jungle climate and would have to adjust while the marines have previous experience and can adapt quite easily. Also if you are stationed on the Falkland Islands it's extremely hard to get out of bed and do your exercises compared to Cyprus where you want to get out and impress onlookers. IceFire 0 Posted March 16, 2003 Ok, people, I know everyone loves talking about Special Forces because they're so fascinating and all, but please no more "special forces" talk. I'm talking about regular soldiers.

Cloney 0 Posted March 16, 2003 Bad ass Regular units, 3rd Infantry Div 24th Mechanized Infantry Div 101st Airborne Div [airmobile] 82nd Airborne Div 10th Mountain Div 4th Infantry Div Most of the Light Infantry divisions that were around in the 80's were also pretty good. I think they all transferred to the reserve component though.

Cloney 0 Posted March 16, 2003 Those are all US ARMY units, I don't know too much about the Marines. I found out today that the 24th Mechanized Infantry fought with an Iraqi Republican Armored Div in Gulf War I and kicked the crap out of them. The 24th is a line unit and aren't considered "elite" per-se. I guess the Republican Guard units weren't too elite either. I'm not saying that the 24th is a bad unit, as I'm sure they are excellent. I am just pointing out that since the Iraqis were elite, they should have atleast put up a decent fight. The 101st and 82nd are also excellent and are premier light infantry units. In a head to head battle with an equivalent unit I'm sure they would kick ass and come back for seconds. I don't know too much about the 3rd, I'm sure we'll see in Gulf War II. However, having seen pictures of them training and having watched them train on the news, I have complete confidence that they will romp any Iraqi unit that tries to put up a fight. (That is if any Iraqi units decide to fight )
Schoeler 0 Posted March 16, 2003 MFR stands for Marine Force Recon. They are the forward elements and special ops of the Marine Corps.
