How LOD is calculated in Arma games?

A mix of distance, polycount and drawcalls + ingame FPS to my knowledge

not to my knowledge

The switching of different resolution LOD happens automatically, based on various factors / in-game conditions (e.g. view-distance, number of objects, video quality, CPU utilization, etc.)
