I know. The US managed to kill more UK servicemen than the Iraqis in the Gulf!<span id='postcolor'>

The deaths caused by friendly fire amongst US forces was 20% (compared to own KIA) in Afghanistan and 18% in Iraq. The FF during the Afghanistan battles was mostly due to the fact that US pilots had to take drugs in order to stay awake during the long flights. These were the so called "go pills" for staying awake and "no go pills" for stopping their effect and enabling the pilot to quickly fall assleep.

Most often US pilots attacked friendly forces DURING their training sessions. E.g. as with the canadians ground forces that were training and shooting at precise targets on the ground. Some of the bullets and the tracers bounced off the training-targets and into the air. The pilots assumed they were being shot at and in their surpressed fatigue acted too quickly without confirmation by their base. As always the pilots then believe they act in self defense.

Gebirgsjaeger and Gebirgsjaeger can be too different things. The real tough units in this section are the Hochgebirgsjaeger which you only find in Mittenwald/Bavaria. The rest of the units profit very much from the reputation of those units. My best friend was in that unit about 6 years ago. I donnot want to evaluate the difference between a Gebirgsjaeger and a Hochgebirgsjaeger but the demands on physical fitness vary.

Are you seriouse ?

Mittenwald ?

If you checked the link I provided you´ll see that Berchtesgaden is practically surrounded by hills. Watzmann may ring a bell. The "Strub" is one of the most honoured military training camp of the Gebirgsjäger. And you certainly got some info wrong. Every Gebirgsjäger - camp has it´s "Hochgebirgsjägerzug". It´s kind of a special unit within the Gebirgsjäger. Yes you have to be especially fit for this part of the Gebirgsjäger.

Here are some pics of the 232 in Berchtesgaden:

b021_jpg.jpg

Every mountain in the back of this pick is part of the training for Gebirgsjäger. You will climb all of them during your regular training and there are special tests like climbing 3 of them on a 2 day trip with full gear and under war conditions with attacks, helo dropping, skiing and much more.

Special weapons training:

Basic sniper training.

In the mountains.

These are the weapons used by the Gebirgsjäger:

Weapons

The Dingo and it´s technical data:

dingo.jpg

240 HP / maximum speed : around 120 km/h

capacity : 2-5 / weight: around 9 tons

arms : MG3 (armoured plated)

There are only 5 Gebirgsjäger camps in germany so it is really something special to get there.

For all the broadband users out there here is a link to a movie about the Gebirgsjäger:

I know this post is huge, but I hope it is informative for you.

Balschoiw. I am sure you know better about these units than me. Would be kind of arrogant to claim the opposite. I didnt know that every Gebirgsjaeger unit has a Hochgebirgszug as well.

What I know about Mittenwald is that you either have to have to have good connections to get in, or you need to be a aristocrat with a title and u definetly must be very damn fit.

My friend told me about international competition they had with other european nations. He told me that italy was kicked out because they didnt use their standard military Ski but brought along private equipment which they overpainted with their military colors....there we go again...the italians tounge.gif

The Germans are very good at whatever they do. Damn them!

Seriously some of their guys, they drink 8 pints and are still up for anything!

I remember we were showing some heresflieger (SP?) guys our escape and evasion exercises and they were not impressed at all!

" We do five times that in an hour shorter! "

" Okay, how about a drink "

" You call this beer! etc.."

ah i love johnny foreigners! tounge.gif

Actually, it was a backfired Carl Gustav which created a large light source, and the pilots thought it was a SAM launcher. In fact, the guy who fired the Carl Gustav is feeling somewhat guilty, considering that the pilots were aiming for him. Though, the US is saying that it was because the soldiers covered up the IR things on their helmet, but all people know that the pilots were too high to see them.

Not hard to believe, pretty much every kind of beer sucks, no alcohol in it at all. Germany (and Belgium biggrin.gif ) have some rather strong beers so when we go to some other country that has crap beer we need to drink A LOT before getting drunk. biggrin.gif
