Ofp mp map filename convention

Recommended Posts

Representing Comrades in Arms [CiA]

as serverowner I have adopted the naming convention for the [CiA]-server.

(Kegetys Editor Addon 1.11, Kegetys Russian Weapons Pack, BAS-Addons)

Servinfo at http://cia.servegame.com

All maps will be renamed soon.

--another edit:--

I just began to rename all maps, but found one thing not remembered in the first post. What is with maps with fewer players then 10? put in 04 or only 4? Please update the first post and I hope you will use 04 (zero four) so that all the maps in row on how many players they have.

I hope that the mods wont mind me resurecting this thread but after a prominsing start to this convention some who said they would adopt it have not done so fully and some are changing it - adding underscores and non-properly formatted names.

PLEASE

For this convention to work its best it is important for all the map-makers and server owners to get behind it and make it the new standard.

I don't know about the "#debug checkfiles needs underscores" issue but it is true that you CAN use different versions of a map.

Maybe we should think about changing all the spaces to underscores. Yes, it's a pain in the ass, all players have to rename their maps or download them again and the admins have to rename them. But debug checkfiles seems to be the only way to check for something like that and i guess leagues will have to implement that check. And filenames without make life so much easier with linux anyway... My server is using the filename convention although nearly all my suggestions during the discussion got rejected by Terox or others, but i don't think we should insist on a name convention that actually cripples game features. If the statement about debug checkfiles not being able to cope with spaces in filenames is true that is...

Wouldn't it make more sense if BIS fixed the server/client to be able to support filenames with spaces? I mean that's something all modern filesystems support and most people tend to use. Not allowing for certain common characters in the filename is limiting the user beyond reason. It's a bug (caused by lazy programming) and should be fixed. Just like the whole checksum issue needs some fixing (see the 'cheats' thread).

1.91 may be final, but the whole checksum stuff doesn't work properly anyways, so why change the convention?

Because 1.91 was the final patch... unless Suma tells different. Yes, we can hope that the ofp server can cope with spaces in ofp2 or a future patch which might never come... but that won't help really.

But first: can anyone confirm/deny that #debug checkfiles does not work with missions whose names contain spaces? Cause else the point is moot and we should stick to what we got: a standard biggrin.gif

How could i have missed that thread?!? It answers some of the questions i have for a long time... Thanks for the link, Softegg biggrin.gif

So we should ask ourselves whether we want to keep the standard we have, although it kinda breaks thinks, namely checking for changed maps which may be important for league games or change it. I think especially league admins will change their names, either because they want it or the squads will demand it anyway. So maybe it would be best to agree on a new naming convention before everyone goes off renaming them differently. I am really in favour of replacing all spaces in the name with underscore and keep the rest of the naming convention as is.

unfortunately its too late to change the convention.

Lets stick to what was agreed and adhere to it

lets face it we aint gonna stop cheats using the checksum

The filechecksum doesnt work anyway. Its unreliable, gives misleading error reports. Isnt cross compatible with different region ofp's

and i have already seen it causing many arguments during visits to various servers.

I even got accused of cheating while logging onto a czech server

and my installation is pure BIS standard

Afaik it's only unreliable on linux servers. And the mapname topic has nothing to do with the server checkfile settings but with the #debug checkfiles console command, which i guess will become a must for league games or else you can just modify the map in a league game. There are serious reasons AGAINST the name convention as it stands now, and i really don't see why it should be too late to change it and why it should be better to stick to a BROKEN standard. During the discussion the "spaces versus underscores" issue was kind of a matter of taste. Now there are serious reasons for not using spaces. There will be two possibilities: don't change the naming convention and see more and more people stop using it cause of the issues these maps have or change the naming convention to something everyone can use without drawbacks.

I for one just wrote a perl script that renames all the maps accordingly and used it on my server and gave it to my players. Spaces in filenames have been a real pain in the scripting ass with linux anyways, it's a clutch to have to rely on globbing and xargs for even the most simple of tasks.

Why are underscores so evil ? Is it only estetic reasons or something more serious ?

Read what Softegg wrote: If you use spaces in filenames the filechecking option does not work anymore and you can't check if a PLAYER (corrected, of course i did not mean server wink.gif) uses a modified map with less fog or higher viewdistance or other modifications...

It's a problem of the mouse clicking community to use spaces in filenames.

If you look in naming conventions or version informations on *NIX systems (Linux / *NIX / BSD) you always will see dots or underlines or dashes to be used in the name. Nobody uses spaces in filenames. Brings too much errors and problems in the system. Also special chars not used (like the @).

The mouse clicking community is not all on the world.

I hope they'll change it some time.

REACTIVATING:

Plz lets think over again...

Most leagues practice to change spaces to underlines because of the known reasons. Also the &'s and @'s aren't the best way...

There's no reason to hold on the old one if there are newer problems and information.

So lets do a new document changing these little things...
