Does my bomb look big in this?

Recommended Posts

Guest jacobaby

Shouldnt the explosions look a little bit more substantial?

I am working on a script for Napalm, and came up with an explosion for it using only what came with the game. I based it on some avis/mpgs of real Napalm explosions.

But it got me to wondering why BIS havent improved the look of the explosions, a very weak point IMHO.

Here's a low quality video, hastily grabbed, of what I have so far. What do you prefer?

WOW!!! That looks amazing!!! Awesome movie! I agree, if you could do that, I don't know why BIS didn't. Are you planning on releasing the script TJ? I look foward to playing your missions using it. Sorry I haven't been on the NG lately. My Outlook Express browser settings got fried by an errant disk error and I haven't gotten around to re-configuring it for my DSL connection. sad.gif

I think BIS has trapped us and we fell into it, they could make all these things but they wanted to see how far the community could go and what the community could make

well just a thought

PS: nice napalm

More likely, they gave us what they could afford to spend in time and money.

When you have to keep costs down, good is good enough. Hobbyists can afford to add whistles and bells because they're just doing it for fun.

Nice vid BTW JB.

Im a bit annoyed at the topic being moved really, as I would have prefered a discussion about the low quality effects. I guess now I'll have to really work on this!!

At any rate heres another capture, properly done this time!

http://www.boanerges.clara.net/TJNapalm.zip

For the last clip I only used a webcam to film off the screen, this time I outputted the screen to a TV/VHS and then recorded the mpg back from the VHS.

I think he used a camera, but if you have a good pc use, SnagIt or Camtasia Studio

What did you expect when you ask if your bomb looks big and have a link to a movie with your "work in progress".

The bomb looks awesome, but it looks like it allready requires a quite good cpu. Much of the real bomb feeling is in the explosion sound.

I agree with you that the effects are pretty weak but I can live with that. It's some time since the game was released.

If I want great effects then there are newer games I could play.

Actually to get an explosion like that can probably done with a lower end PC. Its not in the clips, but I know how to make the SFX more dramatic too (breaking glass etc) quite easily.

I can always limit the amount of debris produced via benchmarking.

I just thought it would be nice if BIS included an effects upgrade in one of the patches, the same way as they enabled footprints for instance. It wouldnt take much.

Woe..speak for yourself.  I would LOVE to have this script in missions and see those kind of explosions.   Also how can you tell that it's a CPU hog when you haven't even tried yourself?

A bomb explosion is MUCH more then just sound. Plus keep in mind this is not simulating just regular bombs... this is simulating NAPALM bombs. There's a big difference. Napalm bombs create quite a light show.  When I saw TJ's video I was absolutely floored at how much it looked like actual photage of napalm bombing runs over Vietnam.

Now all we need is some good F-4 phantoms (with no landing gear sticking out through the wings)), F-105 Thunderchiefs, and A-1 Skyraiders.

The first clip I literally filmed off the monitor with a (good) webcam.

The second was captured through my geforce 4600 to VHS, and then back to mpg. It allows a bit more detail to show up.

Yes I did use SVHS.

Please, no more PM requests, the script is not ready yet, and when I do release it, it will be through BAS. It shouldn't be too long, but I really want to get my rotorwash script out first.
