Bouncing bomb

Recommended Posts

It would be cool to have some Dambuster addons.

like this Bouncing Bomb

Bomb.jpg

Heres how it worked too

How it works

from this image you can see the bomb was rotated oppisite to the direction of travel.

Travel speed of aircraft was 200 knot  hieght was about 50m and it was dropped about 1500m from the target.

Is it possible to make a Launch platform and Bomb..?  PLZ

I think that was developed during WWII no? I don't think such a bomb would work hitting the ground as it could bounce any direction and would likely get stopped by trees, hills, houses, ect.... I think that this bomb was strictly meant for dam busting back before precision guided bombs were made. These days large guided "bunker-buster" type bombs I imagine would take out a dam without any problems.

But I also think that a dam would not be a likely target these days due to the vast number of civilian deaths it would cause.

Finally such a bomb in OFP would be useless because there are no dams.

That looks like somewhat of something they would dump over the side of a destroyer to destroy a submarine smile.gif

actually it was developed by barnes wallace for one purpose, to destroy Dams and the bomb was made to bounce across water not land.

Look at diagram and you see there is water smile.gif

There was no Bridges in OFP until Resistance came out

So the WW2 addons are a waste of time too confused.gif

No but this is an addon with an extremly limited use, compared to WWII vehicles, planes, boats, etc.

This was an exotic weapon in WWII, too.

The Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb had only one application, and that was the destruction of the Ruhr and Saar river dams,

The bomb required a heavily modified Lancaster bomber that could only carry one such bomb, and an extremely narrow set of release parameters <waay beyond what OFP AI could handle>

That said, the Barnes Wallis bomb is totally unsuitable for use by jet aircraft, is outclassed by a SLAM for pinpoint damage, and a modder would not only have to figure out how to get it to bounce, he would have to build a Lancaster to carry it.

Tall order. tounge.gif

This bomb was very precise!

The specialy outfitted Lancaster had 2 headlights, one on the nose and one on the tail. These lights were used to let the planes fly at the right alt. These lights form 2 spots on the grond. When the planes were flying to high the spots would look like this: 0

0

When the were flying to low the 2 lightspots would cross eachother.

But when the planes were flying on the right alt. the 2 spots would form a perfect 8.

And to make sure they would drop the bombs at the right distance they modified the planes with 2 bars with nails on like this

_

|

|-----

|

_|

And the Germans placed 2 guard towers on the dam, so when the bomber could see the 2 towers on the same line as the 2 nails... they were at the right distance.

Got it? Or is my English to bad?

Uh... I never said WWII addons were a waste of time. I love WWII addons and have just about every one ever made for OFP. But like someone else said, you'd have to build a Lancaster bomber for it, and like I said earlier, there are no dams. Yes in OFP:Resistance they put bridges in it. But unless you have information the rest of us don't, I haven't heard of any plans for BIS to release dams in OFP3 or whatever they end up releasing next. If they do then great. When a dam exists in OFP, then maybe somene can make your dam buster bomb addon, but until then, as Avon Lady said, all that time and energy could be better put to making more high quality WWII aircraft, vehicle, weapons, and soldier addons.

Personally I'd like to see that Lancaster in OFP!!!
