Tankbuster 1747 Posted November 4, 2016 I recently gave up my rented box because it was underused and planned to build a small machine at home to run my TS and a few game servers, but Mrs Tank said it was too expensive, even with the savings from not hiring a remote box. Currently, I'm running them all from my main machine, but I was wondering if I should set up a VM on this machine and run the TS and A3 dedis on that? As far as I can tell, there's no technical reason why not, the motherboard and CPU support it and there's 16 GB or RAM available. I'm running Windows 10 Pro. I've never done this sort of thing before and have skimmed over a few guides on the web that seem to make it look relatively straight forward. Is it simple to do and what are the pros and cons of doing this? Thanks, Tanky -Paul-
austin_medic 109 Posted November 4, 2016 Allegedly there is ridiculous performance problems on VM's and the available resources are massively underutilized, leading to crap performance. You'd still be better off renting a box and using that. It has all the bandwidth it could possibly ever need, and if the motherboard or CPU craps out it gets replaced for free (if it doesn't then your getting screwed). Your probably on a run of the mill home internet plan that does not allow you to upstream large amounts of data (unless you've paid your ISP big bucks for them to let you upload as much as you desire and have put in the infrastructure required for that), so running TS3 and multiple game servers over it is probably going to be bad for both performance and other people in the home will probably complain the internet is slower than it should be. Richie 330 Posted November 4, 2016 Try a VPS from OVH, see the range Here I've had a TS3 server running on one for the last few years, alternatively if you want, you can have as many channels on my TS3 server for free with admin rights, I have 512 slots and rarely go over 20, more the merrier as far as i'm concerned. It is run of the mill by UK standards. There is a more expensive package with more upload, but I'm going to hold off getting that until I see just how this works out. Not a problem, always happy to help where i can and this wouldn't make any difference to me or my group :) Go careful with your ISP though, while downloads have no traffic management, uploads do, too much uploaded and they'll restrict you, more info Here
Tankbuster 1747 Posted November 5, 2016 I'll keep an eye on that, though as far as I can see, VM don't offer a way to see how much I've used.
terox 316 Posted November 6, 2016 I'm just rebuilding our older server, reconfiguring from virtual Windows inside linux to windows direct to the metal, it will be an interesting exercise, I am expecting to see a performance gain, but have no idea as to what extent
mech 3 Posted November 15, 2016 Hi, 1. Don't use a VM. Even with the much better performing XEN you will loose more then you gain. And administering a VM Cluster is something you need years of experience for to configure it and make it perform. 2 Your bandwith is low. You need ,~1.5 to 2.5mbit per player. That makes 2 players in a big firefight with your connection. You could add more connections and combine the bandwith but you will need experience loadbalancers and routing for that. 3. Renting is always the safest solution. RAM died? Their problem! Somethings off and the machine is suddenly slow? Reset, their problem. Especially in the beginning it's the best solution to learn in a "safe" environment.
