ID7 0 Posted October 27, 2002 Is there any option on client side to disable downloading of custom faces etc? Why should everyone be bothered to download it? I hate downloading 1MB of stuff I really couldn't care less for when I only need to see who is on a server.
SantaMania 0 Posted October 27, 2002 nah. And it wouldnt be fair... Well, I do believe that disabling user-sounds should be disabled on client side as well... since it doesnt really add anything. But camos and squad info should still be downloaded.
ID7 0 Posted October 27, 2002 What do you mean? It wouldn't be fair? I think custom camo face is almost cheating. The only thing that prevents me from calling it a 100% cheat is that anyone can make it legally. I tell you that these custom faces and sounds might have been a good idea but now it hinders the MP a lot.

A few people asked for this before 1.8x, Bis did make improvements - they added a command for server owners so that they can limit the sixe of peoples custom files. Our server has it at 30Kb. So with 1 face at 30Kb and 10 sounds at 30kb theres only a max of 33okb per player ... Damn I wish we could set a sound limit different to the face limit. ID7 0 Posted October 27, 2002 It is also annoying when you are connecting to an almost full server and the game is about to start soon. Instead of connecting quick you just sit and wait for all the **** to be downloaded and the game starts without you. The result is a very annoyed player. I really think a client option should be added for this. I am for sure not the only one who is bothered by this. As for the server option I think it should be implemented differently. The kick should be replaced by ignoring any custom stuff the connecting player has. Then you could make a server with max custom size 0kB and play without worrying about too many players getting kicked. And lastly, not only the server owners should have the privilege to limit the size of custom files coming to their HDDs. 30 players * 30kB = 900kB Max total server transfer = 900kB * 30 players = 27MB

It always snap's back as soon as you get the "player is connected message" player is connecting no message for 10 secs no message for 20 secs player is connected If a few people connect at once all with sounds this can cause more than 20 secs of lag, it not that our server is slow or is short of bandwidth either. KaRRiLLioN 0 Posted October 29, 2002 I set the server limit to 100 bytes, so really it's as effective as 0. I don't mind the custom faces so much, but when it starts lagging 56ker's because of it then it's just too much. I wish that the kick message would tell players why they're getting booted. Lt_Damage 0 Posted October 29, 2002 I think that it is a valid point to be able to ignore custom faces and sounds by a setting on the server. I believe that the custom faces, sounds, cause unecessary lag. This can be resolved by limiting repeat downloads. I do not believe there should be a temp cache for player sounds / custom faces / and squad logos. I believe it should be up to the client to clean out this data if they wish to, not automatically done by OFP. This would mean you only download a player's face once, and then every other connection is fast. This one thing would solve all your issues aswell as leaving these features intact. nyles 11 Posted October 30, 2002 I agree, a client side option to disable custom faces and sound is very welcome. In fact I would like to see a bunch of new server side variables, too. That way, servers could define if people are allowed to use manual fire, toggle auto height for choppers, lock-on. This would perfectly line up with current variables like disable 3rd person or disable crosshair. I'm all for it!
bwenke75 0 Posted November 1, 2002 IMHO a custom face is not going to lag your game useing 56k. Useing 56k in itself is lagging your game. Custom sounds, and all the new music that people seem to use during the games, could lag it for a while I guess. But a face I don't believe. I think the reason you get left behind is that Downloading on 56k is slow and people just dont want to wait. The most common phrase used in Multi-player is GO GO GO!!!!! Am I wrong? benu 1 Posted November 1, 2002 Different settings for faces and sounds would be great. I'd like to disable sounds on my server, but like to keep faces enabled. Apart from the fact that it represent the fact that one can camouflage the way one wants to, it gives the game an individual setting. In vetmode i can see who the guy next to me actually is cause of the different faces (yeah, i always play with the same guys and know their faces). A client side option would be great too, so if i don't want to d/l other peoples faces or sounds i want an option to disable it when the server allows it. Would be great for people on a slower line, too.
