Leap Computing

Recommended Posts

I have just stumbled across this, its a little over my head, this gaming in the cloud etc: http://www.leapcomputing.com/#about

Anyone think this could help those A3 players having performance issues out ?

If this is in the wrong place mods, sorry, didn't really know where to put it.

I really don't think so, especially not regarding latency, never mind compression and the requirement of a very high use of streaming. No matter what, you will be streaming a video rather than render it yourself, and with how compression works it will allways be subpar, even if we pretend that latency won't be an issue.

Why would it help? The problem isn't people's hardware but the engine. We're already throwing more and more powerful hardware at the engine with every revision yet we see with each revision that newer hardware begins to make less and less of an impact.

I know it's like beating a dead horse, but the performance problems that RV suffers from as a whole will never be fixed by hardware alone. How is a 16 core Xeon and Workstation GPU's like Firepro's and Quadro's going to help when the engine can't make efficient use of enthusiast hardware? Even for people with semi older hardware, upgrading will not make a substantial difference.

There isn't a computer available today that can run the game well. The only hardware improvement that could help Arma out is a massive increase in clock speed, and that we know isn't happening. Adding the additional working of compressing the video and sending it across the network is only going to make the game run even slower.

Yeah, I just wondered, its over my head this type of thing, so I wasn't sure myself.

Looked interesting though.

This stuff excisted ages ago for gaming: https://games.onlive.com/farewell/games

I havent used that service myself, but it never really took off, mostly because the delay is just awful. Adding 50ms to send your input to a server, then waiting 50ms for them to send you a frame back is just plain terrible. Hell, i find just doing normal desktop stuff (Word/Excel/..) awful when using remote desktop services.

EDIT: Also, if your i7 at home cant properly run the game, then their server will have the same problem. This really only helps if you lack a decent GPU which isnt really a problem for ArmA.

Have to say mine runs it very well, though I do use a private server for mp with the group. But it was just a thought to help any that may have needed it, there are a lot complaining on the forum here regards performance, mostly in mp. I think a lot of that is down to bad public servers though. But not sure as I don't use them.

It might be down to bad servers, but I've played on several End Game servers recently and my frame rate consistently drops from about 60 in stage 1 to around 35 in stage 2.

Of course, it could just be a problem with the gamemode.

Edit: But yeah Arma 3 definitely has some weird performance quirks, and even if it didn't I don't see game streaming as being an acceptable substitute for having a decent computer any time soon.
