Spitfire 0 Posted September 22, 2002 Hi, I'm a long-time Flashpoint fan, though been away for a while. Now that I finally bought Resistance I've fallen for the game once again Now, let's get to the topic of my post. I came across some pretty nice piece of software. Recently a guy named Martin Traverso got tired of inaccurate commercial voice recognition software for games such as the Game Commander and decided to write a program of his own. He came up with Shoot, a great voice-command program that uses SAPI 5.1 -compliant speech recognition engine such as the one supplied with MS Office. First I began to use it with Falcon 4.0 to command wingmen and after seeing how well and accurately it worked I decided to try it with OFP. It works like a charm! Now I'm issuing all radio commands by microphone and it's fast and effective. I've tried Game Commander, and to my surprise Shoot works a whole lot better and more effeciently than GC. And it's totally freeware. Visit Shoot's homepage at http://www.geocities.com/martin_traverso/shoot/index.html If you have a decent microphone or headset I really recommend giving it a try. I'm currently designing Shoot-templates for different games and I'll put them at http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/spitfire/shoot.html. I just uploaded a finished template for OFP's radio commands. Being Victor Troska has never been this easy edit: updated the link since this topic is still stubbornly sticking at page 1 and Shoot homepage has moved

Since the program is so new version updates have come out several times per week. There's a discussion of Shoot going on at Falcon4 forum at frugalsworld.com. It requires the SAPI speech engine which unfortunately is a big file if you don't have it already with Office. Shoot itself is small.

Guest Posted September 22, 2002 I just tried it. Works very well. It uses the Microsoft Speech Engine for recognition and it is pretty good. Just make sure that you train it first. There is no reason why this should be in OT. Moving to General

But the SAPI is the reason why it's superior to GC. There's no need to train the program individual terms, it should recognize anyone's voice by default and furthermore, you can "train" it by reading training texts so it can adapt to your speaking style. I think downloading Framework and SAPI is a small inconvenience in order to get it working. Well, I have a DSL, who am I to speak
Mohamz 0 Posted September 22, 2002 Why is the Microsoft .NET Framework needed. The question is not if he pays him but if M$ is paying him.
Mohamz 0 Posted September 22, 2002 Ohh wait, I just saw that the file format is in xml, so it must be the reason behind it

bn880 5 Posted September 22, 2002 This is very good, I still have to make my own custom commands. Hmm, I wonder what it's going to look like when I play OFP now, talking like a robot with goggles on my head. Might as well put all the gear on... EDIT: Thanks for the info about this! GAMEER_77 0 Posted September 23, 2002 Is it worth downloading this big 80mb total file? I have a download thingy (Flashget) so that i could do it incrementally. But how do i know if i have it? i searched program files for it, and it same up with a folder named "isapi" and two .dll's. But its only about 200kb. I really want to try this out, but if its one of these things you use once, but never again, then don't bother. PEACE

Otherwise, I don't know. You have to decide whether you find it useful to make issuing commands faster and easier thus making playing kinda more enjoyable. If you have used GameCommander, Speechbuddy or other speech-programs for gaming you should know how much they add to the immersion. Speechbuddy is lacking useful features, GameCommander is good but both of them have a remarkably big change to misunderstand your phrases. I think it's only my opinion, but I feel Shoot is better in recognition and the currently the latest version is already nearly equivalent of GC:s features. I've been using GC with Flashpoint, Falcon 4.0 and some other flight sims, but as soon as I tried Shoot I saw that it was superior to other speech progs I've tried. Unfortunately the majority of the credit does not go for Shoot, it goes for Microsoft. Finally M$ has done something of good quality such as their new speech recognition engine. (and FS2002 of course )
