Annoying- While flying, Lights in Altis dont come on until you get close to them??

with dx12 we might see thousands of light source without much performance hit

Yeah this could actually be true.

Welp, good news is RTM is this week sometime. Sad part is, Arma won't have DX12 till 2016. =/

Speaking of GTAV, while that game is capable of rendering more lightsources at once, most of the lights in the distance are just simple bright textures (until you get closer of course). This trick is used in many games, even in ArmA3 for the runway lighting. Expanding this to distant lampposts would be the idea.

Example in Just Cause 2:

Now I think this sort of approach would be entirely feasible now even without DX12, or any sort of performance impact whatsoever.

We cannot compare GTV5 with Arma 3.

In GTA 5 environment, a fair amount of objects are not rendered, are just let's say, placebos.

With Arma 3 every single grain of sand is rendered, and if only our FOV is being rendered, every thing in a 360 degrees radius is being loaded and processed.

Probably they had to reduce the lighting sources in the same they reduced the quality vs distance.

Otherwise we would have a massive throughput of data and every time we move the mouse would be like loading the game for the first time.
