jimbop 25 Posted October 4, 2014 well I sussed that one chaps with continuous tweaking of tile size and texture layer in samplers, I got a setting that didn't flash. :) problem I have now is that my [real]sat and height images don't line up exactly, hence some land underwater etc. ive tried using global mapper but I cant get both images on screen. one always disappears! I know that this is due to layer projection which ive tried in UTM lat/lon settings with the same result. how would you crop/line up images? thanx for your help. jakerod 254 Posted October 4, 2014 To align an image: Figure out the UTM Zone I use Google Earth Open Google Earth and go to Tools > Options Locate the "Show Lat/Long" box and change it to Universal Transverse Mercator Hit Apply and then OK Hover over the area you are making and look at the bottom right. There should be a number and then a letter. The number is your zone. Note: If there is nothing showing make sure you have Status Bar visible on the View Menu Open Global Mapper Go to Tools > Configure Select UTM for the Projection Select your Zone. Your Zone is the number that you found in Google Earth plus the hemisphere (North or South) that your area is located within. Make sure Datum is WGS84 Hit Apply and then Hit OK Select "Open Your Own Data Files" either from the background or the File menu Open your heightmap Open your sat map File > Open Data Files Open your sat map Select the Digitizer Tool Right Click > Create Area Shapes > Create Rectangular/Square Area (Specify Coordinates) Bubble in Corner with Size In the width and height box type the size of your terrain (ex. a 1024 x 1024 height map with an 8m cell size would be a height and width of 8192) This box will appear at the upper right corner of your loaded data. Select it (by clicking on it) and move it to the area you want (by hitting Shift + CTRL + M) Once you have it in place make sure your sat image is on top (Tools > Control Center and use the arrows on the side or hide layers by unchecking the box) Go to File > Export Raster > BMP (Export Raster might be different in other versions) X-axis and Y-axis are your cell size (ex. 8m going by my example from before) Check the Always Generate Square Pixels box Click Generate World File and Generate Projection (PRJ) File Go to the Export Bounds tab and select Crop to Selected Area Feature(s) Press OK and choose your save destination Now make sure your heightmap is on top (Tools > Control Center and use the arrows on the side or hide layers by unchecking the box) Go to Export Raster > ASC Make sure you have METERS selected for Vertical Units Leave the X-axis and Y-axis as they are (Global Mapper is not good at resampling height map data) Check the Always Generate Square Grid Cells box Go to the Export Bounds tab, bubble in Crop to Selected Area Feature(s) and hit OK Save it Load your heightmap into a trusted Heightmap editor (like L3DT), resample it to the size you want Export it as an ASC again but go to the Options button and turn off projection data If for some reason your heightmap and image are still not lining up correctly you can try shifting them around. Put the one you are adjusting on top (Tools > Control Center and use the arrows on the side) Select the layer on top and press Options (In Control Center) Lower the Translucency to 50 - 75% Press Apply and OK In the Layers Options go to Projection and you can give the layer False Easting and False Northing to try to adjust it When you make a change hit Apply and it will shift in the main work area without the need to exit the Projection Tab or the Options Window To anyone who knows better than me, if this is not a good way to do this please let me know. jimbop 25 Posted October 5, 2014 22.In the width and height box type the size of your terrain (ex. a 1024 x 1024 height map with an 8m cell size would be a height and width of 8192) ok up to this, but my existing width and height are small, any box I put round them will be massive. thanx for the detailed explanation! http://imgur.com/WBQpYE3

You should just be able to make it whatever size you want your terrain to be. Is your data smaller than it should be for some reason? You can test with the ruler tool. It is two toolbars below the word"Analysis".
jimbop 25 Posted October 6, 2014 well my images measured ok with the ruler but their size[width height] was .15 and .10! im now trying different sat height images of same area which display correct coverage ie enclosed area 105km2. going through the usual 1000 parameters to get past 'default sat not found blah blah' got it generating layers. 81 layers being generated........and its taking hours! never took this long before?? If the images were really that small before then it would make sense that a large one would take this long.
