New Patches for old Total war games broke everythimg?

Yesterday I returned from my holiday in Croatia, now I launched Steam and I´m surprised to see that it is downloading a Patch for Rome Total war (yes the first one). Apparently this patch was supposed to implement MP without Gamespy but it completely fucks up the game. AI doesn´t work anymore, mods don´t work anymore, a plethora of other new bugs etc.

WTF CA? Did they do this on purpose because people liked and played the old games more than the new one they made? And more important, how am I supposed to patch back with Steam....

Always disable updates until you're sure you need to update. Doesn't help with this problem unfortunately, but I would assume a fix will become available.
