Fixed 1 Posted March 2, 2014 Hey, I'm sitting here with a computer that I doesn't use and would like to use to host a arma 3 server. My question being how many players do you think I can have in gamemodes like invade & annex or more simple scenarios with this setup?: 18/18 Mbit connection Intel Core i5-3470 @ 3.20GHz 4 gb ram Thanks in advance! :)
Tankbuster 1746 Posted March 2, 2014 Tell us more about the connection. Is it a home broadband? What router are you using?
terox 316 Posted March 2, 2014 you're probably looking at a minimum fireteam to maximum squad sized player numbers (4 to 8) with ai in the region of 50 unless you use something like @Alive This is just a ballpark figure
Fixed 1 Posted March 2, 2014 Tell us more about the connection. Is it a home broadband? What router are you using? Yes, it's home broadband and I'm using a NETGEAR CG3000. I don't know what more to add  you're probably looking at a minimum fireteam to maximum squad sized player numbers (4 to 8) with ai in the region of 50 unless you use something like @AliveThis is just a ballpark figure Does AI really require so much bandwidth? I heard that 0,512kbps should definitely be enough for one player. 18/0,512 = 35 players or am I just retarded :/

I'm not completely au fait with the network protocols the game uses, but I'm guessing each player has at least 3 or 4 individual connections to the server. Same goes for the router, this is a relatively inexpensive, domestic router, it's going to struggle with any real numbers of players. This is why the vast majority of servers are either slot servers or rented boxes. Because they have a good, nearby connection to the fat pipes on the internet with expensive routers, rather than a cheap netgear in your lounge. The answer to your question isn't easy - it's a very inexact science, judging this, but for a simple small mission, I'd say you'd be looking at less than 10 players, maybe 8 comfortably. Well that's a bummer :( Can you give me a example on a better router? And if I had a better router how much in player count would it change?
pawelkpl 29 Posted March 2, 2014 It depends on mission you want to play. Eg. Xeno Domination = 18 players with 200 AIs.

I wish I could name one. I could only suggest an enterprise class one, but not a particular one specifically and of course, I'd add a disclaimer after you've spent your months mortgage repayments on one that you might not achieve the results you want. You want crystal clear numbers and you simply are not going to get them. Even BI can't tell us what bandwidth settings to use on our rented boxes that live within 6 feet of the internet backbone, so I'm afraid the user and peer group just doesn't have the answer to your question. Pawel mentions Domination here but he doesn't mention that this mission is highly dynamic. One day it will run just fine on a setup, the following day it wont because the mission spawns different numbers of AI every time. Last thing. The netcode for this game is pretty damaged right now. It's not broken, but it's in a bad way. So any figures we could give you today (which as I say, we simply can not do) would be all wrong the next time the game updates. The very best answer we can give you right now is that you will probably get around 10 players in a medium sized mission, perhaps 8 in a big Domination, perhaps 20 in a small mission. Good to know, thank you for your time. I'm not really interested renting a server, because then I've nothing to do with this computer :) Just a little question, is AI a really killer here? Also what do you specify as a small mission: 25-50 AI?
