AI in AAA Vehicles (And AAA in General)

Recommended Posts

I've set up a quick mission in the editor with a Blufor AA tank and an Opfor gunship, with the gunship spawning a few Km away with a seek and destroy waypoint on the AAA. The AAA was set to combat mode, and was hit with AT missiles before it even noticed the gunship. This is ridiculous, AAA is made to counter these threats, yet it's the first to die in all situations. Even more ridiculous is that when replacing the gunship with the light attack/transport Orca, the Orca still killed the AAA without any damage!

AAA vehicles should have incredibly long-range radar and engagement ranges, it shouldn't 'wait' for the enemy chopper to be 100 meters away.

That's interesting, ive also seen helos striking from long distances, but is this not a realistic scenario? is AA more effective with multiple units spread and placed in areas where they cannot be spotted and engaged from long distances? I'm no military expert but for example I wouldn't place it on a hill with no cover, or out in a open field etc.

Should that make it safe from air? Also were height of hescos a factor blocking AA ability to strike first? I ain't doubting you or anything as I've seen it happen in game also, that is targets being taken out with no helo in sight, but not specifically tested or seen with AA vs helo so curious about that and AA placement, maybe throw your test mission up.

There is also the thing that once the AAA shoots a missile the helo will deploy flares and it will ALWAYS miss , so to hit the target the AAA will need to fire an other one soon after the first one or risk missing again by the second flare deployment of the helo.

So the situation we have now is 2 missiles per chopper or 2 choppers per AAA since they have 4 of them and granted that the helo didn't spot the AAA first and even then its is not sure that the AAA will survive.

Also the 30mm gun on the AAA is very weak on helicopters(at least) , just imagine what will happen IRL if an A-10 fired on a chopper with its cannon , my guess is that i would be torn to pieces or cut in half and really fast , in game i have seen choppers being fired upon by AAA while facing away , only to see them turn back to shoot a missile at the AAA and be done with it.....

One can say that the AAA and A-10 doesn't have the same gun which is true but they are of the same caliber and i believe that they would do the same damage on a chopper more or less.

My point is that even if it wasn't the AI fault , the situation would be the same with the problems above. The AAA now are anything but AAA , an APC can fit the role of an AAA just as well ... if not better.:D

For the AI aspect i would suggest enlargement of detection range only for air vehicles.

I do think AA placement is important here, out in the open they will always get owned but when concealed they seem to get the job done, example mission

Imo if you turn it around and give AA longer spotting ranges then the complaints will be AA is to effective helos have no chance? unfortunately AA ai probably will never understand concealment in terms of navigating terrain, but as a mission maker you can at least take this into account.

What's ridiculous is that I can fly Mach 1 in a jet 400m up and an IFV can hit me with it's auto cannon without missing a shot if I fly straight... WTF? AI aim is OP.

An FIM-92 (which is a very generous comparison given the launch platform and future tech) has a range of 4.8Km. The AAA should have a range of this or slightly higher. SAM's in real life create a massive 'AAA umbrella' that would be lethal to fly helicopters (or even jets, depending) in, and must be taken out by ground forces, artillery, or fast and low 'wild-weasel' style airstrikes. It should be the same way in game.

Your statement infers that one side or the other would be 'overpowered.' The is no 'overpowered' in ArmA. Period.

I'm just talking about the game, there's lots of things in the game that are not based on reality, like just about everything, if we are talking future tech then will helos have more potent firepower radar evasion capability? Dont know bro, i just Google stuff when i need to, but in terms of the game if your AA is being taken out... Conceal them?
