Hey guys, I was curious as to whats the best way to play the campaigns?

If it best to just play with it Vanilla or are there any mods you recommend that DON'T mess up the missions.

Thanks!

AFAIK its best to play with mods which have no immediate impact on AI.

IIRC there are a few very good mods that have NO impact on AI and seriously improve gameplay:

CBA_CO, JSRS, WarFX-Blastcore, STHUD, ScopeFX, FNC Scope, JTD Fire&Smoke, PvpScene.

So try and stay away from mods that influence AI, e.g. ASR_AI, TPWCAS, ACE, Zeus, GL4, etc.

If you really must use them I'd suggest ASR_AI and TPWCAS.

Let us know how you get on.

I would avoid all mods completely, based on the hundreds of confused and angry posts about problems most likely related to mods. Official missions are not tested using mods. Who knows which mods will create a problem. You will encounter enough issues as it is using OA beta and the missions themselves.

Then when are the AI mods suppose to be used? Are they for custom missions that you make yourself or what? Sorry for the questions.

As I mentioned above, I'm sure that you can play with ASR_AI and TPWCAS without too many problems.

Generally-speaking they REALLY enhance missions.

I tend to use them and if I get stuck on a mission I'll try different strategies.

Failing that I'll check a walkthrough.

If its obvious that my experience is very different from what's described in the walkthrough, then I'll disable the AI mods and revert to earlier save point so I can play through that mission without them.

Later, once I've passed that mission I'll renable the AI mods.

Like I said 90% of the time you should be fine.

Moreover my experiences are far from unique, many other players have been using AI mods in missions and campaigns:

ive gone thru harvest red with a mix of zeus and ASr and its worked fine much better than vanilla and is very fun to play.. totally reignite this game for me now, ive racked up few hours lately lol

Obviously your mileage may vary, i.e. in highly-scripted situations don't come crying ;)

ASR_AI is in ACE right? So could that mean I play the stories with ACE or just use ASR separately?

No ASR_AI is a seperate mod, which you'll find here on the forums and/or Arma websites, e.g. Armaholic

If you're new to Arma and modding, I highly recommend you start slow, i.e. familiarise yourself with the vanilla game (nomods).

As you become more familiar with the game, you'll discover certain aspects that disappoint or even irritate you.

So then you come here and look for mods to correct those aspects.

Gradually you can mould the game to suit your tastes using mods.

Ultimately Arma is highly configurable.

That's perhaps its greatest strength.

If you don't have the patience for all that, head for the CoWarMod which combines so of the best mods and offers dozens in reserve.

Or if you want a REALLY different experience go for ACE, but it'll change the game beyond all recognition and certainly make it more complicated, not to mention slow its performance and raise the risks of mission incompatibility (in non-ACE missions).

So don't say I didn't warn you...

I'm not a real stranger to Arma. I'm in a group where we do ACE co-ops. But I always wish to play the campaigns and other usermade missions on my own time. I like Arma as it is, but the only thing I would like to change is to make it so that shooting near the enemy makes they find cover or something. Something with suppression. I have used Twpacs but I dont understand how to configure it. (some times I will be suppressed and other times I can't tell if it is even working)

Best is you use only what is required. play the BIS campaigns default with no addons. If you are new to ArmA, I would suggest you to, disregard initially MODS just to get familiar with the core game. Once you've done that you can inform yourself about all different kind of usermade mods and experimenting. It's impossible to check everything the community comes up with it would take years playing 24/7. LOL

Once you get the hang on Vanilla ArmA check out usermade stuff. From MODS to terrains to missions. You can find everything your heart desires for this game, you just need a lot of time and moreover patience. ArmA is a bit different from other war games but that you'll have already figured out on your own I guess.

In any case most of the time whatever you download for ArmA will have a read me attached in the relevant folder. Read this stuff there's reason why people undergo the hassle to write them. There you should always find the exact requirements for the mod - Mission -terrain whatever.

cheers :)
