Meteorite hits a girl..

Recommended Posts

BBC article

The possibility of dying in a meteorite "accident" is pretty much same as

the possibility of dying in a plane crash.

I've always said this to my friends, but no-one of them has ever believed.

That girl is fine because the rock was so small, but this again proves

that we live in a very dangerous world!!

"On November 30,1954, the first modern instance of a meteorite striking a human being occured at Sylacauga, Alabama, when a meteorite crashed through the roof of a house and into a living room. It bounced off a radio, and struck a woman on the hip. The victim, Mrs. Elizabeth Hodges, was sleeping on a couch at the time of impact. The space rock was a sulfide meteorite weighing 8.5 pounds and measuring seven inches in length. Mrs. Hodges was not permanently injured but suffered a nasty bruise on her hip and leg. Ancient Chinese records tell of people being injured or killed by falling meteorites, but the Sylacauga meteorite is the first modern record of this type of human injury. In 1911, a dog in Egypt was killed by the Nakhla meteorite.'

maybe she is a martian..or a witch....how could 1 in a billion happen? i tell you..she is not 'normal' tounge.gif

1 in a billion has to happen every once in a while. Its a mathematical inevitability.

Man, I love this sort of thing- it reminds a person that the world is always trying to maneuver in odd random ways into position to sneak up and bite you on the ass.

Some of you may remember the movie "Magnolia".

I loved the part where the boy decided to commit suicide,

and jumped from the roof, while in the meantime, his parents had

a fight, and father (or was it mother) shoots out of the window.

And that shot hits the boy and kills him.

If the father wouldn't have shot, the boy would have survived..

Other really cool scene, from movie "AmeliÄ":

Girl and his mother go to church.

When they came out, a suicider who has jumped from the roof,

hits the girl's mother and kills her.

I just love that kind of things.

AFAIK, this is the second ever documented case of a meteor striking a person...so it has to be a lot less likely than dying in a plane crash.

Dying in a plane crash would be more comparable to being hit by lightning, I think...

I don't think so.

There hasn't been many documented incidents, but there is always

the small possibility that a large meteor hits Earth and kills us all..

So the probability is pretty much the same. smile.gif

Nope, if it was large enough to wipe us all out it would be an asteroid, not a meteor. tounge.gif

Seems like it doesn't, i've seen pics of meteorites hitting a car and it went through the car (through the engine).

As you've probable read they can also go though houses so it's rather weird that someone survives it. SIze doesn't matter, a really small thing can kill you too (just like a bullet)...

Weird, huh?

What's a ricochet?

When the meteor hit something, bounced off it, and then hit her in the leg. Thats a ricochet.

Thats the point of the 1000 monkeys thing. If something is even infinatly smally possible but still possible given INFINATE time it WILL happen. It may not happen in time we even have numbers big enough to describe but it WILL happen. The possibility of an explosion causing life in the universe was probably ridiculously remote but its had infinate time to happen and now were here. We just didnt know about the infinate time

Damn hell, why is something like this not happening to me. I mean I am not supersticious or so but still it is a very cool talisman. I know it is gay for men to wear things around your throat (or ear-rings). but maybe you could find a decent style of not making it look gay!
