zverushka 0 Posted August 19, 2002 Don't use Linux, it's awful. I used slackware for a year, and lemme tell ya, it was the most painful experience I have ever had. It took me 9 hours to try to connect to the internet, and another 9 to get Xfree86 4 up and running. I installed WINE but it completely fucked up multiple times, the only thing I liked in Linux was enlightenment window manager, but that was not worth the trouble it was causing. after using it for quite a while, dumbass me, I realized that linux was shit and I immediately switched back to windows NT 4.0 , soon to be replaced by win2k pro. A new linux user trying to cut their teeth on Slack is sort of like a new car owner getting a box of parts and being expected to put the car together! I can do a slackware install and have internet and x going in about the same time as a windows install. But that's only because the first time I insteallled slack was like... 7 years ago! Linux really is a no-show if you want a gaming platform. It's why I still have windows on my machine. But everything else can be done quite well in Linux. I am running Mandrake at the moment. And saying 'linux was shit and I immediately switched back to windows NT 4.0' is like saying 'Wow, this great steak is crap, lemme have a Big Mac'

Linux for work, Windows for OFP.
WKK Gimbal 0 Posted August 20, 2002 When bashing people who just want an easy-to-use computer above all else, do remember that these people often makes that choice because they have a real life outside the computer, as in: "Hey, how about going to the beach and enjoy the sun, instead of sitting here configuring network?" vektorboson 8 Posted August 20, 2002 I think you can run OFP with the lastest WineX-version, which is a derivate of Wine, and it has some Copy-Protection-Code implemented, so FADE should not be activated. About ease of use: Installing Linux may be difficult, but using Linux with a GUI like KDE (especially the 3.0x series) is very easy. Even my sister, who is 16, uses Linux for working and she says that using Linux is easier than Windows. Take it as you want. I would like to play OFP on Linux, as I could turn a lot of programs off and switch to a minimalist GUI, which doesn't eat all of my Resources. I could even play OFP online without being hacked!
