kdk11 1 Posted July 30, 2013 Hello I am really new to the whole retexturing side of things and I have a few ideas that I just cant seem to do. So I am wondering if there is anyone out there good at retexturing who would like to help me make my project come to life? http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=164610671 This is what I have so far. Sorry about the quality I do this all on a laptop so the gfx arent at all good. So yeah the theme is Navy search and rescue. And there are a few more things I would like to add to the "fleet" so if anyone out there is interested please let me know :)
da12thMonkey 1943 Posted July 30, 2013 Hello I am really new to the whole retexturing side of things and I have a few ideas that I just cant seem to do. So I am wondering if there is anyone out there good at retexturing who would like to help me make my project come to life? The Take on Helicopters sample package contains photoshop retexturing templates for the Heavy helicopter, which work perfectly on the CH-49 Mohawk (they're essentially the same model externally): http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Take_On_Helicopters:_Samples I used it to make this reskin and it worked out really well: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=156228560 All I really had to do to improve over the base template, was add some dirt around the panel lines and some 'grunge' overlays to make the paint look a bit more distressed. x3kj 1247 Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) You have to keep the "lower base" of what you are retexturing - unless you are trained and can do all the details by hand. Using a solid color will look flat and boring. Use Photoshop (or Gimp) layers over the original texture and try different transparency and layer-effect options / get a feel for it. Also check out youtube for retexturing tutorials, there are alot of them (mostly for skyrim though ) Edited July 30, 2013 by Fennek
kdk11 1 Posted July 30, 2013 now that you have mentioned it, it does look flat
sabre 244 Posted July 30, 2013 The files da12th linked above will fix that mate. No need to play around with the original textures levels then. I haven't downloaded them but you should be able to simply 'multiply' some of them them over the top of what you have done there and it would already give you a largely improved look, then it would just be touch ups and maybe add some dirt/oil etc. in the relevant area's like da12th also mentioned he had to do. Good luck with it :)
kdk11 1 Posted July 31, 2013 Yeah am going to give it a go. Its the offroad and the pilots that I cant seem to retexture. They just never work for me.
brad7 4 Posted July 31, 2013 Just a tip regarding the design of the texture of the helicopter. Im guessing its based on the sea king right? Well you've put the Raf insignia on the helicopter [not the red white and blues] whereas its normally a squadron sticker etc. For reference: http://www.key.aero/central/images/articles/1095.jpg
kdk11 1 Posted July 31, 2013 yeah mate i couldnt find any good squadron insignias on google
rocksy 11 Posted July 31, 2013 I used to skin aircraft for IL2, trust me, research of half the battle. ending up with 200 layer templates isn't unheard of.
kdk11 1 Posted July 31, 2013 the one problem I face using the take on helicopter skins is, I cant really determin which part is which for the helicopter as it doesnt seem to be outlined for the main part of the chopper. So its a bit of trial and error untill I find the right place for the writting etc lol

NeoPixie 10 Posted August 1, 2013 Best thing to do is make a skin layer call it 'help' or what ever and make each panel a bright colour then have key for each colour for personal reference (: you could then edit from that
kdk11 1 Posted August 1, 2013 (edited) Ok so I have played around with the textures from take on helicopters and I am impressed with the added detail they give. [/img] As for adding oil and dirt to these, well I wouldnt know where to begin in making these type of layers lol anyways after doing that SeaKing I thought I would try the other version and I ran into a few problems... [/img] [/img] Still some work to be done But I will get there. If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it. Thanks. scorch_052 127 Posted August 1, 2013 I dont know how to solve your playing card issue, but I'd recommend dulling down the brighter colors a bit, especially if you're not sure how to add a layer of dirt, muck, etc.
Amit 17 Posted August 5, 2013 Do you mind if I take a look at one of your PSD files? I may be able to help you with the playing card issue on the nose of the helicopter.

sabre 244 Posted August 6, 2013 (edited) It's just the way the model is uv'd, that part of the texture curves. You have to make the Card not square on the texture to make it look square ingame. Basically the corners are turning up ingame, so on the texture you have to turn them down, and play with how much until you get it to appear square ingame. kdk11 1 Posted August 6, 2013 is there a tool on photoshop that allows me to curve the card? Im not that familiar with photoshop

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Today was a busy day. What Sabre posted is most likely the case here. EDIT: Sabre is correct in curving being the major issue here. However, there was also a rotation issue. If you see the following image, the image needs to be parallel to the cockpit windows to show correctly as well. When you combine this with the warp tool fix for the curving, you get the desired result: And in-game: Here's your PSD back with the changes I made: http://www.mediafire.com/?cgfqqmfmgs2927n They were pretty quick and rough, but I think they mostly got the job done.
