I solved the low FPS problem. (SSD/HDD problem)

Recommended Posts

I ran arma 3 alpha and beta on 2 different machines. Phenom 695 BE + GTX 670 and i7 3770k + 6990. In both cases single player was running perfectly maxed out while I could not get more than 15 fps in multiplayer.

I tried different servers, busy and empty, big and small. I tried various launch parameters. I tried all possible graphics settings. I tried cfg tweaks. Nothing worked. Even though people with worse machines are playing without any problems.

Today I had enough and decided to try one last thing. I uninstalled arma 3 from my regular HDD and re-installed it on my primary SSD. I fired up multyplayer and I could not believe my eyes. I was playing at 30 FPS maxed out. I went to work and decided to try the same solution. I uninstalled arma 3 from my secondary HDD and put it on my slightly faster primary HDD. Same result! I gained 20 fps.

I really have no idea why this worked. Arma 2 and all other games run fine on my secondary SSD/HDD maxed out, arma 3 on the other hand did not like it. Maybe it was just a fresh re-install that did it.

If you have a great PC that should run multiplayer without any problems but it does not, try re-installing it to your primary or the quickest drive. Report back with your findings. I apologize if this does not solve your problem.

We need a good benchmark tool to really compare those situations, may be a Placebo effect. SSD Helps a Lot, but not in FPS, only in loading and fix some of the pop up issues.

Nah an SSD should definitely help. Some stuttering caused by a HDD is pretty much the same as FPS lag, with an SSD it shouldn't happen anymore and definitely makes things smoother.

Yeh I think an SSD does help, I can run it relatively maxed out with my system @ about 25-30fps on average, up to 40 if i lower the draw distances a bit. And I only have an i7 2600k and 1 GTX 570. Not exactly a top of the line system.

It doesn't help, we had people (including me) testing the game on Ramdisk, which is much faster than any SSD.

No fps (or any general performance) improvements, just better loading times.

Exactly I have seen a lot of people with topnotch systems , including SSD:s , with problems.

SSD is just a pain killer not the solution. The solution lies behind coding and game optimization.

Let me present my scenario.

I try to play for example Left4Dead 2 at maxed out settings, without AA of course. And what I see is that my GPU is doing well, there are no FPS drop outs due to my geforce card, but HDD is working all the time and I have some FPS lags. ANd now I am completely confused. You say that SSD has no influence on FPS, but from what I see is that if I replaced my HDD with SSD there should be some difference. Either I should buy more RAM (now I have 4GB) or replace my 7200HDD with SSD.

Whats your opinion???

Is RAMDisk noticeably faster load than SSD?

I am on SSD now and I had an SSD die on me in the past. It has a limited amount of write-cycles - I heard that ArmA3 writes A LOT of stuff all the time, even when nothing really happens. I fear it might shorten my SSD's lifespan.

Hello grahamneumann,

as per the forum rules, please do not dig up threads older than four months.

Thank you!
