A10 Flight Issues

Recommended Posts

I hope someone here can help me out. I've searched the forums for this topic but came up empty, so my apologies up front if I missed it........

So here's the issue: I'm playing a single player campaign (Takistan Chronicles) that I DL'd for Combined Ops and I'm at a mission that requires flying an A10. Problem I'm having is that the plane will only gain about 260 or so in altitude and then it just drops off. I'm unable to gain altitude beyond the 260 or so mark, so as the terrain rises I end up crashing into a hill because I can't climb any higher. Pulling back on the stick at max throttle should put me into a steep climb, which it kind of does when I take off, but then flattens out at about 260 in altitude. I'm using a Logitech Freedom 2.4 joystick. I have the stick pulled all the way back constantly just to airborne. Even using the keyboard arrows I get the same result. Flaps down on take-off. Flaps and gear up once airborne, then I can get to an altitude of about 260 and that's it. I tried flying in the editor with the same result, so I don't think it is an issue with the campaign itself. This is driving me crazy!!! Anyone have a clue what I'm missing here?

Sounds like either:

1. You are trying to climb too quickly after take-off. Keep your climb rate reasonable, 10-15 degrees nose up.

2. You have something bound to "nose down" that is countering your efforts to gain altitude. Check your aircraft keybinds.

What is your airspeed? If it is colored red you are stalling.

If you are using the throttle on your joystick, maybe it's not correctly configured. Try pressing down "Q" constantly for maximum thrust.

Thanks for the feed back from both of you. I did finally figure it out and you are right Harzach. I was just being to aggressive with my attempt to gain altitude after take off. Just need a little more finesse than I thought to fly this thing. Although I have to say, I think the flight dynamics are pretty poor for what I would expect out of an A10. Considering I have to keep so much throttle on to keep from dropping like a rock. No low and slow with this A10 that's for sure.

Anyway, problem resolved with a little patience and your input!

Thanks a bunch!!

If anything, its performance in Arma is better than IRL. The A-10 has a pretty low power/weight ratio - it's not an F-16. Just keep the throttle firewalled if you are climbing. In level flight, you can maintain airspeed without throttle if you are above 280kts or so.

You're exactly right. Like I said, I just needed a little more finesse rather than the flying skills of a gorilla. After finally figuring it out I'm definitely getting in the groove now!

I a typical - older - computer game, the flight characteristics of each aircraft are the same. In real life of course they are quite different.

Generally, I have difficulity flying in the Arma2 series because the flght characteristics of each aircraft are so different.

In the Arma2 series if you practise on any one aircraft you can become an expert - but that will not mean you will be good at flying any other aircraft in the game.

That appears to be the case. This is the first fixed wing aircraft I've really spent any time trying to fly in Arma2 and just like the Helos, you really need to learn how each one flies, and I like that! Makes you better for it!

You do know that you can place yourself and a bunch of vehicles to practice? No stress, no time limit, no enemies (although you can place those aswell for combat practice).

Although the ArmA 2 flight physics aren't really flightsim-like, it is more demanding than other FPS' flight model. Take your time, apply common sense about physics and practice. ;)

Yeah. Using the editor is actually how I figured it out!
