BBrown 1 Posted May 26, 2013 Well, I very much like the addition of dedicated radio protocols however there is one thing I think they can do to make it even better. When a black op is taking place, or a squad is using stealth in general they do not risk giving away their position by whispering orders either in person or over the radio. When they go silent, they go SILENT, and only use hand signals to give orders. Of course it depends on the situation, however that is how it works. I think it would be cool if they added that to the stealth radio protocol, or created a new protocol named Radio Silence protocol or something. That would be extremely immersive and a first for a military game. You want Arma to be considered a true MilSim? Take that extra step and you'd be doing yourself a huge favor. Who else would like to see something like this in vanilla instead of waiting for a Mod for it like we did in ArmA 2?
metalcraze 290 Posted May 26, 2013 It's hard to make hand signals usable in a computer simulated environment. BIS tried that in ArmA2 and ACE mod even more so by giving a whole interface for handsignals but it didn't work well. Mostly it has to do with controls getting too complicated/uncomfortable for that. We are short on keys as it is. Besides what if you want to order around only selected few soldiers? How would you differentiate between signaling stop to everyone and only to 3rd and 4th team member? Probably too complicated and ultimately not worth the effort. Making whispering more silent instead of trying to whisper-shout like it is now should do the trick. samco 1 Posted May 26, 2013 you could assume that in 2030s Throat microphones and/or Subvocal recognition are more widespread , hand signals would cool anyway but like metalcraze said are difficult to implement.
BBrown 1 Posted May 27, 2013 Yes this is true, however I can think of a way to do it. The keys wouldn't matter. You wouldn't need to do the hand signals yourself. You simply set the squad to stealth mode as you do now, then give orders as you normally would, just instead of them talking, they would use hand signals. It would keep things simple while also allowing for the game to actually feel like you are moving around without giving away your position. And for example say a player is the one on the receiving end of the order, the text in the bottom left would pop up as it normally does, just no talking, hand signals only, that way you know the squad leader is talking to you. Also, differentiating would be easy. For example, say you want to send 1 and 3 to a corner. You select only 1 and 3, give them the order to move, team leader or squad leader, whichever one you have, raises is hand with index finger extended.. pauses.. fist.. extends index, middle and ring finger for 3..pauses.. gives hand signal to move. I am not saying implement a complex set of controls for hand signals. I am simply saying that instead of whispering loudly, just change it all to hand signals.. you still give orders the normal way, your guy just automatically does the corresponding hand signals for the orders.. That wouldn't be too hard honestly.
astrospud 1 Posted July 30, 2013 To add to this, while multiple hand signals will be very difficult to implement, could it be feasible to include a single directional arm gesture to indicate threat direction, move order (in concert with net/verbal comms)? I have found radio calls often require that I look to my map for targets/threats, sometimes getting shot in the process. My squad mates see targets and call them over the net and when in visual range, with a pointing gesture, I can be more effective, not taking my eyes off the battle space. Maybe this can be implemented with a single key/combination? Thoughts?
2nd ranger 282 Posted July 31, 2013 Well if you're talking about co-op, that's what voice comms are for, so hand signals are kind of redundant. If you're talking about AI, it wouldn't work very well because the AI are constantly looking the wrong way. They even throw grenades the wrong way sometimes. It would be hard to make them signal in the right direction.
