Resistance: ctd since system-upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody.

Since I upgraded my system from an Athlon 600 to an Athlon 1400 I always get CTD´s in Resistance after a few seconds or minutes of playing.

I never had any such problems with my old gear, wich was the same except Mainboard and CPU.

I now have:

Athlon 1400

A7A266 Mainbord, newest drivers (Ali_i107, including ali agp 1.90)

256 MB SDRam

CreativeLabs 3dblaster Geforce 2 MX 32MB DDR (29.42 det.)

Soundblaster Live!Player 1024

Virtual Mem on drive D: , where OFP is also installed, set to min.1024, max "the rest" which is about 6 gig

Win ME

I tried all possible settings with agp 1x to 4x, with all posibble agp aperture sizes up to 256 MB.With some settings I can play a little longer, like 2 minutes, with others i crashes immediately after mission start.

Maybe two typical entries form the flashpoint.rpt can help anybody who knows more about computers than I:

I hope somebody can help.

If there´s anything else you have to know tell me please.

The funny thing is, I just bought the new gear to be able to play OFP better, now I can´t play at all...  sad.gif

EDIT: I didn´t put those smilies in that flashpoint.rpt stuff, don´t know how to get rid of them...

Hmm, nobody ? confused.gif

In the meantime I did another format c: and reinstall of WinMe, installed OFP, GoldUpgrade and Resistance from scratch, let Windows handle the VirtualMem, handled it "myself" again, took out my soundcard completely, let Resistance run with minimum settings on everything, like 320*200*16 lowest viewdistance etc (looks funny biggrin.gif ) , put in another graphicscard (GF2MX from Asus), and because there was nothing more to upgrade "downgraded" DirectX from 8.1 to 8.0 from the Resistance-CD using DXBuster and a Reg-Cleaner and used older graphicscard drivers.

And still absolutely no success. mad.gif

The same problem persists.

Do you have a different CD-Rom drive to try using? I'm assuming you've been running it from the same one all the time?

Was the upgrade before or after getting Resistance?

Ah finally somebody smile.gif

No, just that one CD-Rom drive.

And I upgraded the System after getting Resistance.I could play it without problems with the old gear, well just a little slow and choppy from time to time, that´s why I got the new board and CPU.

All the other components are the same I used before.

And thanks for answering !

Ahh so the mobo is new too......

"A7A266 Mainbord, newest drivers (Ali_i107, including ali agp 1.90)"

I have the same motherboard, Opf works fine for me, have you updated to the latest bios? 1011 is the latest.

I didn't use the Ali all in one thingy patch, I found the IDE ones messed up XP so I use XP's default drivers except for the standalone Ali Agp patch.

Hmm, the Bios is one thing I didn´t think about at all.Maybe because it´s a "new" board...But who knows for how long that thing was getting dusty in that shop, because my version is 1004.

So if you use 1011 and are fine with it I think I´m gonna update it tomorrow, although that´s one thing I´m always a little "afraid" of...As I said, I´m not THAT firm with computers..

What I´m gonna do now is "swap" my harddrives (had the small old 2gig as c: with just windows on it and a 13,6gig as d: with games and stuff), and install WinME on the big one, now as "c:", so I can let Windows handle the virtual mem and still have a lot of it, and use the small one as a storage place for "stuff".

I think I should´ve done this a long time ago.

Oh, and with this install I´m only gonna use ali_agp 1.90, not the ide stuff biggrin.gif , at least for testing.

I´m gonna report how it works out,and tx for the help again.

Yeah normally upgrading your bios is something to be wary of, fortunately the Asus has a real nice windows app for updating your Bios.

Here's what you need incase you don't have them already....

1011 Bios Mirror 1 Mirror 2 Mirror 3

Asus Update (app to install the bios) Mirror 1 Mirror 2 Mirror 3

If you're already reformatting and reinstalling windows try reinstalling without ACPI support.

in win98 you use the string: setup /p i

theres a space after 'setup' and the letter 'p' ...

dont know if its the same for ME. do a search on the net.

Let me know if it fixes it for you, worked for me. but ME is sposed to have better ACPI structured support...

Reporting: Problem solved !

The problem was that I´m a stupid idiot and therefore used my old PC 100 ( !! ) ram with the new gear. confused.gif

I bought 256 MB DDR today and everything runs fine.Maybe a little choppy but without crashing, and I think I maybe can get rid of the choppiness by expermenting a little with AGP aperture settings and stuff or just live with it.

Boonie Rat, when your tip came I already did the reinstall, so I didn´t try that, but thank you.

I think I´ll still do the bios-update, but I think for now its "Never touch a running system"...

So thank´s a lot for the help, guys!

Keep your heads down out there  tounge.gif

Greetings,

Wolf

The choppyness will likely go away if you add some more RAM to your system. Everything else looks good as far as your hardware is concerned, but Resistance needs more RAM to be enjoyable than the original OFP.

Hmm, think I´m gonna do that, thanks, but not before next month sad.gifbiggrin.gif

Any suggestions on the AGP-settings? Thats one bios item I don´t know very much about.

Right now I use AGP 4x and AGP Aperture Size 128 MB...

Get more RAM!! 512 is mandatotry for games these days!.

Leave the 4X setting on, don't worry about the AGP App either if its running OK. its never had any affect on performance for me wink.gif ...
