jeppelykke 0 Posted July 16, 2002 Hey Hey, First GOOD Game (OPF) It rules I guess in near future a new update will come out for the game. What i like to suggest is that a MENU system of some kind is able to be added to Mulitiplayer Maps, so you can setup a MENU when they die they can choose who they like to respawn as (Soldier,Medic,Sniper) I know you can just ADD them all as playable and then when people connect/server start they choose who they want to be, but some times you might want to change class, and annoying you have to restart_server/reconnect_to_server/make_new_map to be able to change your man. I hope this is something you would consider if possible to be added on a near future update of the game. Best Regards Jeppe Lykke, Denmark
shadow 6 Posted July 16, 2002 I like that suggestion. Atleast it would be nice to respawn with the inventory you originally started with, not just an M16 with one mag.
m16a2m203 0 Posted July 17, 2002 Father always said he won the Purple Heart for being stupid enough to continue firing for too long from one spot. Consider the m16 and the mag your "medal/prize" for doing the same.
Placebo 29 Posted July 17, 2002 Your Dad won a purple heart? From where? Something to be proud of that
shadow 6 Posted July 17, 2002 Yeah, that's something to be proud of. But a hillarious way of telling why he got it LMAO ...firing too long from one spot
m16a2m203 0 Posted July 17, 2002 Hmmm, getting a little off topic but since ya’ll asked – For this story I’ll just refer to my father as Roc. This story is entirely true. It may seem funny at times and even seem to be a fib but trust in me and his story. Roc has never actually told me the full story of what happened and nor have I asked him. Through the years I’ve come to find that it is a story which he would rather just leave be. I respect him and his wishes.  I’m 30 now and as I’ve grown I’ve heard only bits and pieces of it as he has told to those who ask about his wound and plus what I have gathered through his dd214 and personal belongings he has in a box in an upstairs storage room of his home. Roc and my future godfather both dropped out of college and volunteered for the USMC back around 1968. Both were sent to MCRD and from there they eventually made their way to Vietnam but in different units and occupations. Roc was assigned to GCo/ 2nd Bn / 9th Mar / 3MarDiv / FMF Pac as an 0311. He spent a total of about 3 months “in-country†before his injury allowed him to return to the states. Now Roc has two different stories as well on how the events took place. One which are the actual events which is pieced together here and the other short and to point to make the story more light-hearted. I’ll give ya’ll both. Number 1 Back around I’d say late 68 - early 69 possibly, my Roc was most probably stationed somewhere toward the northern area of operations of central Nam. He was assigned to a patrol that was to cross the border into Laos (unknown if by foot or air) and was tasked with the job of searching for the usual – NVA activity, supply lines, etc. I believe that the actual event took place at in low light conditions. So picture if you will the following  as I have in my own mind – jungle foliage surrounds him. His unit is in a column formation. The point man has lead them inadvertently lead him and the rest of the men along a trail through the foliage that cuts along the side of a steep hill much as I would think like those pictures I’ve seen numerous times before or if not try looking at the pictures from the Vietnam mod of the Ashau Valley for a better feel. The trail cut along the side of the hill close to the top. Let’s say to his left is the hillside steeply rising to the top and to his right from the trail the hill drops off very steeply. So steep in fact that it would be virtually impossible to quickly navigate down. To his front some of fellow Marines as well as his rear all following this path chosen by the point man to follow. Now here Roc likes to point out that whoever made the decision to follow the trail was about the dumbest piece of trash to ever walk the face of this earth. You see most probably the NVA had either been at the right place or the wrong time or had set up the ambush ahead of time but at any rate they walked right in it. The enemy had positioned itself at the top of the hill. They had also placed soldiers in front of the unit along the trail setup with a large caliber machine gun. Roc describes the machine gun having “perfect†placement for shooting down the length of the trail for a good distance which would allow the mg to slice very easily through an unsuspecting column. With the enemy positioned on the high ground it was a very well laid out kill zone from what he described. I don’t know what actually happened while the firefight occurred and what happened after to those that participated on both sides. The only thing I know from Roc’s snippets of info is that he began firing from a position and continued to do so for some time at the enemy. By doing so however he did not follow his training or comman sense at the time. The enemy was able to pick up his position he says most probably by the muzzle flash of his m16 (If you see the flash…..) They fired in his direction and hit Roc in his left hand. More precisely they hit his left “bird†finger which was not completely taken off but left dangling by portions of skin, etc. Roc eventually made it to a medical hospital where his digit was reattached. It sits there now on his hand at a slight permanent angle unable to ever be fully closed so matter what his “bird†finger is always pointing. Roc is also not sure why the USMC allowed him to return to thestates after the incident when a lot of other men with wounds such as this were patched up and sent back out. He just says he “Got lucky I guess.†He returned with an Honorable Discharge as a PFC with numerous “give-away†medals and the Purple Heart. Apun returning home my father eventually married in the month of Aug 71 to my godfather’s cousin and I was born in the month of March. (Do the math) Number 2 It’s short and to the point but he says during the firefight that a lot of cussing and hollering was going back and forth. Charlie said something about his family ancestry, he told them they couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn and stuck them the “finger†etc… etc… Well there you have it. How my father won the Purple Heart for as he says being stupid enough to get hit. Sometimes I think – Just a few inches further to the side and neither Roc or I would be here today letting you read this story and touching your life. I dropped out of college in 91? I eventually joined up under the DEP in 92 and was finally sent to MCRD myself in mid OCT. of  93. Talk about a sh*t storm. The Rangers in Mog had just been through hell and shown dragged through the streets. Nothing but tears as I left home from mom and grandma’s. Roc just said do what they train you to do and try not to attract any attention to yourself. I signed up for 0200 and had the grades and asvab to back it. Ol curly at MEPS tried to get me to sign up with something to do with aircraft maintenance or some bs. Doesn’t matter. I never completed my training. Naval docs informed me I had Hodgkin’s Disease and was placed on chemo and rad. Ol lurch at MEPS let me slip by some how. I was treated and finally in remission and have been so since. So I spent most of my enlistment just like my father in a Naval hospital. I was Honorably Discharged in 94 as a LCPL. No medals to speak of. No fights to fight and now that I’m older I’m not as gung ho as I used to be but I did enjoy the time I did have serving. I eventually went back to college and graduated just like my father did. I eventually married Jan a number of years back as well and now have a 4 year old son who was born in July. (Do the math.)  -----The whole reason I first posted to this was the fact that I got Resistance the same day and had just played a single mission in the night and actually saw the ground light up in front of me as the muzzle flash went off. It actually made me think about those events way back then that affected us. I have been twice blessed in this life to be here writing this to you. I hope you find some enjoyment in our story.------- gren My small home on the internet - OJR
