Ruud van Nistelrooy 0 Posted July 16, 2002 My favs are 1. Platoon 2. Stalingrad (we got it off amazon dvd for the guy who couldn't get it) 3. Starship Troopers 4. Saving Private Ryan I hate Full Metal Jacket, i dunno why people like it. The drill instructor is funny, but that doesn't make up for the fact that its a nam movie and theres hardly any decent action, and only like 10 people get killed. To much poncy hippy talk about how war is horrible as well, that only really exposes the lack of action and the huge amount of boredom. Apocalypse now i found boring as well, but i didn't really watch it, since i was more interested in jamming a pineapple into my nostril than to watch a group of yanks sailing down a river and then seeing the endless shite about how terrible war is and how drugs are great and how the american government is horrible..... Platoon is the don of all war movies, not only do i share the name Chris Taylor with the main guy, but it does the whole ''war is terrible'' thing MUCH more convincingly (by making you actually see to see how terrible it is not having some hippy just tell you about it in some ''hilarious'' or cliched way) while not getting rid of all the action. I finished watching platoon believeing that all those whining yanks actually had a reason to be whinging all the time. The best war film ever imho.

EveronVetsAgainstTheWar 1 Posted July 16, 2002 I'll let you all guess from my sig. FMJ is such a good movie. It's not a blastem all to hell war movie, its cerebral, it shows the war in a different light... ah I'm not good at critiquing movies. I think the movie is great for all the reasons Ruud hated it. AN I only half watched and found it boring. I'll watch it again sometime. And I know this probably doesn't fit in the War movie genre but I really liked Behind Enemy Lines. I thought it a great action movie/thriller/suspense whatever. It had you on the edge of your seat. And its setting was similar to OFP!

Developed by ID Software ("Doom," "Quake"), the game was awarded the computer action/adventure of the year prize, as well as online gameplay of the year kudos by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. The game, released by Activision, follows a highly decorated Army Ranger recruited into the Office of Secret Actions. He is then given the task of escaping and then returning to Castle Wolfenstein -- the stronghold of Gestapo capo Heinrich Himmler -- whose occult and genetic experiments are raising an unstoppable army to level the Allies. Along the way, there are hearty helpings of blood, violence and gore as the Ranger guns down Nazis and the mutated to save Western culture. The game has roots that date to the 1983 release of Muse Software's 2D game "Castle Wolfenstein," created by Silas S. Warner. -------------------------------------- Wonder if it'll be any good. Judguing by every other movie adapted from a computer game, I'd say no.
Guest Posted February 18, 2003 There is only one contender for greatest war movie of all time, and I can almost guarantee I am the only person on these forums to have seen it. It's called "Come And See", from 1985, Russian. Look it up on IMDB. There is no way to really describe it, you can read all the reviews of it you like (if you can find any....), but it still won't ever give you a true idea of this film. I saw it a few years ago, and it still cuts right into the centre of my being...it truely is the most powerful film I have ever seen (and I've seen about 7000 films). I know it sounds like I'm over-rating this a bit, but I've seen (and enjoyed/loved) Apocalypse Now (Redux incl), Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Das Boot etc, etc but Come And See is in a league of it's own. If you can find it (even the crappy DVD transfer), get it...just don't watch it if you have just broken up, depressed, or even drunk....really... And if you have seen it....then you know what I'm talking about. I bet you still remember it....every horrible detail.

I've seen a lot of Russian WWII movies as a kid, but back then I struggled with the language a lot more than I do now, and I don't remember if I've seen this particular one. I just read some reviews for it, sounds very promissing.
