Widowmaker84 1 Posted February 16, 2013 Hey guys, Widowmaker here from 7th Cav servers. Some of you may know that I really like playing as FO for gunships of all the various types but I want to expand into playing FO for base artillery. Ive been trying to figure it out how to get the coords to call in and mark on map where to put down artillery fire. I know that the grid is 100m squares, and the hypotenuse (corner to corner diagonal range) is approx 141 meters, but I still cant seem to get good coords for marking when I know the range, due to nothing ever being directly ahead or at an exact 45 degree angle from me. Are there some tricks to getting these right? So far the only thing I can think of is trying to make a triangle and using some algebra to get the ranges, and then use direct 90 degree angles to figure it out. Problem is, I only have 1 range. So anyways, I know that might a jumbled mess and hard to understand my issue, but if anyone can point me to a guide for acquiring coords as an FO for artillery fire, Id be much appreciative. Thanks! MissileMoose 10 Posted February 17, 2013 Hello, I assume that you're playing with ACE, as the vanilla artillery system allows the operator to click and fire quick easily. If this is so, I recommend you take a look at the Defence Advanced GPS Receiver (DAGR). Combine this with a Vector 21B and you can precisely determine the range; eight digit grid reference of, and the angle to your target. If you are playing without addons then hopefully somebody else who has experience as an Forward Observer can help further. :)
Harzach 2518 Posted February 17, 2013 Additionally, if using ACE, ACE map tools makes this kind of thing a bit easier.
Widowmaker84 1 Posted February 17, 2013 No Im not using ACE, its for playing on a non-ACE server. What Im trying to figure out is... say the armor icon isnt on the map yet, or im trying to call it in on infantry/artillery positions. What methods can I use to get the grid coords to call the fire in at?
mr burns 132 Posted February 17, 2013 Use 8 digit grid coords instead of arma´s standard 6 digits? That methods gives you pretty spot on fire all the time, at least with the SNR paladin addon, which is the only i´ve tested with.
Harzach 2518 Posted February 17, 2013 If you're open to addons, Mapplus is a tool similar in function to ACE Map Tools, but without any requirements (no CBA, etc.). It will allow you to find a coord given a range and heading. Another way would be to print out a compass rose with radial lines on a piece of paper (tracing paper or printable clear sheets would be ideal) so you can hold it up to your display and plot a heading. Drop a marker on your pos, and one at the approximate target site along the correct radial, then correct your range using the Pythagorean theorem. Just a few steps, and soon it will become second nature. Heck, you could even use a good old protractor.
NoRailgunner 0 Posted February 17, 2013 You just need to mentally divide the grid square in tenths, estimate the distance from the grid line to the point in the same order (Right and Up). Or you can use an addon that shows you higher digit map/square coordinates.
Widowmaker84 1 Posted February 25, 2013 Alright, thanks for the responses. Will use these and see how it comes out. Thanks!
