Bringer 0 Posted July 12, 2002 >>Having a 4 year degree doesn't mean you can't be a moron. I assume this is somehow relevant, but I can't come up with anything. I highlighted the part of the post I was responding to, nothing more. Smaller departments often don't have the same requirements as larger ones, where more pressure will be placed on the officers. Additionally, traffic cops and other "lower rank" positions have lower requirements, but higher education is needed to move upwards, regardless of time on force. From another board I frequent: </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Education is only relevant in reference to what you want to do. In our department (LAPD), if you want to promote, a degree or advanced degree is extremely advisable but not required. We do have one commander (1 rank below deputy chief) who has no college degree but he is the exception. Remember, on a PD, promoting isnt everything like it is in the military or fed LE. You can promote yourself out of all the cool gigs like SWAT, K9, Bombs, SIS, Narco etc. Promoting (climbing) is not always highly respected by the rank and file.<span id='postcolor'> </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">To be promoted above the rank of CPT, our dept. (Kansas City Dept) requires a Master's Degree.<span id='postcolor'> >>Once again all you have to have is a GED. Even the army doesn't allow that... http://www.goarmy.com/programs/ged/ged.htm </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Did you know the Army is now accepting qualified applicants with high school equivalency certificates? If you've earned your GED, you could land a great job in the Army or Army Reserve. <span id='postcolor'> Amazing what you can find with 5 seconds of Google, huh? --- This really has nothing to do with the situation in Inglewood, but what the hell. Posts like "All cops are bullies. They became cops in order to further their bullying" are just retarded. I don't even know where to begin disputing that insipid generalization, so I started elsewhere.
EveronVetsAgainstTheWar 1 Posted July 12, 2002 Thats surprising about the Army and GEDs because I was told specifically by a US Army recruiter that they do not allow GEDs. Guess she didn't know her stuff.

Major Fubar 0 Posted July 13, 2002 Unfortunately, the job of a Police Officer is attractive to dickwads who get off on having power over people...I wouldn't say that they are in the majority, but there certainly is a significant percentage of cops who display this type of mentality. Same kind of people who are drawn to becoming parking officers, nightclub bouncers, driving testers, forum moderators ( j/k) etc.
