Dog shooting

It hit pretty close to home, being a dogowner myself. I can imagine how the handler feels. Personally, I would proceed to kick the crap out of the two shooters if it went down as described on that site.

Dunno why I posted it, just felt like letting others know I guess.

That story made me angry, but it was so long that I lost my anger by the end of it.

None-the-less, those two officers had every reason not to shoot the dog. Like geez, it's a german sheppard on a crime scene. mad.gif

Why did the two cops punch down the dog's owner in the end!?!?!

Was it because they thought he was going to knock out the 12-year old??

Maybe the stupid handler shouldn't have ordered the dog to attack a 12 year old girl. Looks bad to people who do not know the background of things. I say the dog was not to blame nor the officers who shot it, but the handler blew it.

Besides, using dogs for hunting people is disgusting.

I have a really hard time buying that the K-9 handler hadnt reported that he was on the scene. I also doubt he failed to report that he had released his dog. At any rate, how could they miss the fact that the K-9 van was right by? Friggin morons. If the dog was mauling the kid I'd understand it, but surely two grown policeofficers must be able to tell the difference between a mauling dog and a dog holding someone down by the leg?

"Besides, using dogs for hunting people is disgusting."

Why?

Bleh. It's a dog. Too bad it got killed but really nothing to shed tears for IMO.

Well, in my book, any creature willing to risk its life to save other creatures is worth sheading tears over. Especially when its needlessly killed, and even more so when it was doing what a human told it to do. Of course, I am biased since I own a dog myself.

Why using dogs to hunt people is disgusting:

Dog is the first animal domesticated by man. This happened a very long time ago and thus the relationship between our two species has grown from mere symbiosis to something resembling a friendship. Man and dog are connected much more deeply than man and any other animal. That's why majority of people find eating dogs so disguting for example.

Dogs, for some reason, are manifestations of loyalty. And because of that, they'll do whatever they are taught and told to do. They even participate in our petty fights and squabbles, loyally biting and assaulting whoever they are told and loyally taking the bullet. They do this, even if it is not their fight (not even a fight of their entire species).

For a person getting assaulted by a dog however, this whole friendship thing makes no difference. He only observes that an animal has attacked him, it really makes no difference whether it is a dog or a mountain lion. He cannot know if the animal is trained to not to kill him. He only knows that this animal is more than capable of killing him and that there is no certainty whatsoever that is has some kind of social constraints not to use deadly force. A human police officer can of course be safely assumed to posses said social constraints, because they mostly posses them.

So to sum it up: 1. It is not their fight but ours. We should handle our disputes without involving dogs in it. 2. The trauma caused by getting hunted by a dog is way greater than getting hunted by people.

I love dogs. But if I was assaulted by a canine, I would do all in my power to incapacitate or kill it. I would not wait and see whether it just chews my leg or rips my throat out.

Do you think that dogs are such nobel animals, that they try to

save other creatures?

I think that they just do what they are told to, to get an award.. Award is probably not the right word, I mean that the

dog thus earns the right to live with its "owner".

Its not like dogs are used to hunt people for sport. They are a tool. I'd rather be hunted by a trained dog then shot with a friggin tazer or shot with a pistol, but that might just be me.

If I was assaulted by a regular canine, I to would try and put it down. If I was assaulted by a police canine however, I would surrender in any way possible. Killing a police dog isnt exactly helping your case.

You can always claim that you hysterically fear dogs. Since this is a common thing, no court would give you shit for wasting that police dog.

"Do you think that dogs are such nobel animals, that they try to save other creatures?"

You should try reading what I wrote. I said "any creature" not "all dogs". That means I'd cry over a cat that had saved lifes if it was needlessly killed, or an elephant, or a friggin giraf. The point is that any creature that does its best and risks its life to save others deserves respect, for whatever reason they did it (be it instinct, love or the thought of getting a reward).

And no, dogs are not noble by default. There does however exist noble dogs, just as there are noble humans.

"I think that they just do what they are told to, to get an award.. Award is probably not the right word, I mean that the

That depends. Many dogs gladly risk their life for a family member without thinking about rewards, its pack mentality and about protecting the young or the wellbeing of the pack. When cats have stayed in burning buildings, trying to wake up the families inside, I doubt they were fishing for extra candy.

Note: Cry is a bit to strong, I rarely if ever cry. I'd feel for such an animal though, as in, feel sad.

Possibly. Usually the handler is close by though and I reckon he'd pounce on you if you tried to kill the dog. Since they are a team, the dog is often used to simply scare a suspect into submission and I think police dog vs suspect fights without the handler envolved are quite rare.

And that's what I wanted to know.

I have this relative, who had a big dog, could have been a german shepard, but i can't be sure.

Anyway, the dog seemed to be really connected and trusty

friend of his owner.

But then, when they were walking on ice, they suddenly dropped through the ice. And what did the dog do?

Helped the woman out?

No.

The dog used the woman's head as a stepstone to get out,

and then ran away.

Well, my relative got out of the freezing water, too, so there was some kind of happy end to that story.

EDIT:

I'm biased too, since I have a cat. tounge.gif

While dogs can have very noble personalities one should take in consideration that they are domesticated *wild* animals. If I saw a dog attacking a 12 year old kid and had a gun I wouldn't hesitate one second. Better safe then sorry.

It also depends on the race of the dog. This was a german shepard, and they are usually mentally stable and like people so the chance of it going berserk are small. If it had been a dobermann pinscher, I would salute the officers that shot it. They are dangerous and notoriously mentally unstable.

One can also question what really happend. That article you posted was far from objective.

Yeah, it was quite biased.

It seems very odd to me that two police officers would shoot a german shepard, pinning a suspect, near a K-9 van, without trying to check if it was a police dog or not. Then again, they could just have been idiots

I wish one day they'd stop using police dogs and use lions and tigers, now that be cool. Or use grizzly bears for riots, lol.

Do police-men salute in your country! Wicked!!!

I think the problem is not which dogs goes Beserk easily and which is stable. But which has the power to kill and is unstopable. A shepherd dog may freak out, but he is not trained to kill (since he is a shepherd) and does withdraw if you hit him hard enough (or if he cools down himself = e.g. feeling as the winner). A fighting dog however is made to bite and never open his jaws again. YOu can kick him, you can stick a pen into his eye, that beast wont move. Secondly are those muscles around the jaws several times stronger than that of a german shepherd! So if a Pitbull freaks out, he will not rest untill the victim is dead. So shoot him!

The best police dogs would be pigs, they are easy to train and got the best noses. But who would allow a pig to go through his office or car checking for drugs?
