TOH will not launch, No entry 'bin\config.bin/CfgInGameUI/MPTable.shadow' etc...

Recommended Posts

Game will not launch, No entry 'bin\config.bin/CfgInGameUI/MPTable.shadow' and Error compiling pixel shader

It is with some in-trepidation that I am creating this post (TOH specific), given the amount of 'heated' responses by the subject, so firstly, sorry but I am left with little option. Yes I have searched the forums, spent hours reading most of the 300+ threads, spent far too many hours uninstalling, reinstalling, deleting configs & folders, re-downloading, verifying, all with & without admin privileges, wash rinse and repeat, and still have the problem. As far as I know I have tried all the suggestions that are reported to work, though they are all based on Arma 2 I assume the same goes for TOH. The only other variable with my install is that my installation is not on the C drive. Please, any help or suggestions welcome, I doubt I can get any kind of refund for this game as Steam thinks I have played almost 3 hours of it now, when I in reality not got even as far as even a splash screen.

Also I would like to add I own Arma2 + OA + some mods and they run without issue, though my Arma 2 is not the Steam version while TOH is.

I am ready to do a full on facepalm if I am being an idiot and just missing something, I just want to get the game to work.

TOH + Hinds Steam Version

Host OS is WinXP + SP3

Drivers are all up to date, gfx card is a 1gb nVidia 450GTS

Thanks in advance.

Hey grounded,

So many variables, and because you have made install changes, it makes it more difficult to try to find the problem... So we'll start with:

Have you tried installing the game to the actual Steam folder( "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\take on helicopters" )? Do you have Steam installed to default, or in the folder you have created for ToH?

Hi & thanks for the fast replies, Steam and its games are installed on my E drive, in the same directory structure, eg. {E:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\take on helicopters}, other things that I have NOT tried yet are anything to do with the registry, or a complete removal of all Bohemia software on the system.

Sorry I cannot post all the requested rpt info, as it either craps out my browser, reloads a blank page or gives me a too large post error. Any way to attach files? I shall post a chunk of the last portion of the TKOH file, hope that helps.

I had read that thread suggested when I get time I will revisit and re-read again to see if I missed anything. Is not a small download from steam coming in at about an 18gb install.

This happened to me (the entries in your .rpt being like that) because i had directory junctions for my Arma2\Addons and Arma2\Dta folder inside my Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead folder.

Thus TOH loads them when it loads Arma2, and again when it loads Arma2 OA.

I recommend a thorough pruning of your data files so they're all in one place, get rid of any symbolic links except to mods you want Take On Helicopters to be able to see, and launch any/all expansions solely by going through the ingame menu (leave your startup shortcut with no parameters)

PvPscene, that makes no sense; i'm referring to the duplicate entries in the .rpt more than any particular bug. However; the specific error message he is getting upon loading the game is the same one I got as well; I was simply explaining what I did to fix it.

I'm sorry, after thinking about it and especially after seeing the issue resolved, I must admit I went through a lot of stages in troubleshooting my own installation; I suppose I was probably mistaken on this. However, I still contend the following is true:

If one isn't sure what all directories to put in there, don't use a modline at all. Just enable the expansions through the ingame menu.

That is BY FAR the simplest solution; if you get it to work THEN consider adding complexity to the system.

@PvPscene @dwringer

I have re-read the OP's post several times, and I don't think the OP has Arma( any version ). I believe that the OP can not launch ToH at all. The only addition that the OP has, looks like 'Take On Hinds'.

@grounded

Have you tried launching the game without Hinds activated? I know if you purchase the game as a bundle with Steam, it will automatically download and install Hinds for you. Try this:

  • Run Steam as an Administrator( right click the icon and choose 'Run as administrator' from the context menu ).
  • Now go to your 'Library', and locate Take On Helicopters. Right click this and choose 'Properties'.
  • On the 'General' tab, click the 'SET LAUNCH OPTIONS...' button, and paste the following into the box:
    -mod="E:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\take on helicopters"

  • Try to launch the game now.

If I have the correct mod launch command, this should launch ToH without Hinds. Maybe your Hinds Addon is causing the issue. Perhaps you have to run the game once before including addons?

Let us know... :d:

Also I would like to add I own Arma2 + OA + some mods and they run without issue, though my Arma 2 is not the Steam version while TOH is.

This is faulty:

-mod="E:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\take on helicopters"

Must be (quotes around whole parameter):

"-mod=E:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\take on helicopters"

Hi

I've had same problem - Sven's "-mod=C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\take on helicopters" fix gets me able to launch & play vanilla take on helicopters (thanks Sven - been hunting the forums for days just to get this far) but I can't launch take on hinds. I've got the files, I've verified them & run as administrator. I tried launching direct from "datacachepreprocessor.exe" in the hinds/DLC folder but just get the original config.bin error again, even if I delete the start command line. Any ideas?

PS: should mention I downloaded both games on steam as a bundle.

Hi keithrose

Try this:

"-mod=C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\take on helicopters;E:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\take on helicopters;Hinds"

I believe that if you are running everything 'vanilla', you don't need the full path. So maybe try something like:

"-mod=take on helicopters;Hinds"

... AND/OR ...

"-mod=take on helicopters;Hinds;Rearmed;Noisecontrollers"

As the executable is in the same folder, it will then 'consider' this the 'Root Folder', thus beginning to locate the folder(s) from here.

I am not sure but try that and see what happens.

*** EDIT ***

I just remembered that the order at which these are placed is very important. Unfortunately I am not sure what that order is, at the moment... Search the Forums, I am sure it is here somewhere...

Valid is:

"-mod=Hinds"

"-mod=Noisecontrollers"

"-mod=Hinds;Noisecontrollers"

or for Rearmed:

for DLC/community mods + Rearmed:

Like

"-mod=Hinds;Noisecontrollers;c:\path\to\Arma2;c:\path\to\Arrowhead;c:\path\to\Arrowhead\Expansion;Rearmed;c:\path\to\TKOH"

I would also like to point this out:

I am not sure if the logic( game code ) for the Arma/ToH series is case sensitive, but as an active PHP, Javascript, C#, VB coder, I can say this; it doesn't hurt to make sure that you use Hinds, instead on hinds, as the logic may not care, and this is how the Hinds DLC folder is named on install. However, it WILL HURT if the logic does care.

In certain languages like PHP/Javascript, or certain Operating Systems like Linux, this is extremely important!. As these languages see 'ThisText' as a completely different entity as 'thisText' or 'thistext'.

If you are new to coding and trouble shooting games, this would be a good habit to start, rather than fix( break bad habits ), later down the road... :)

I have also had this error with TOH on startup. Frustrating isn't it!

I purchased TOH when it was cheap on steam, I already have ARM2 + Operation Arrow Head installed from DVD versions, purchased a couple of years ago, saw the addition of ARMA2 content with the Rearmed DLC and thought - that's for me. Considered it a kind of addon for Arma2.

I went through the interesting cycle of debugging the TOH install, and re-downloading TOH a couple of times (10GB each time is insane). The first time I was not logged on as administrator, and just assumed the issue was install procedure failing because of this (though no error was reported during install by TOH). The second+ times I was administrator.

Seems that Steam will not allow TOH to perform a "First time install" for a second time! So I went into the registry and deleted the elements identified with the vdf files under the Steam folder for TOH. This did allow first time install to proceed...i.e. direct X, reamed etc installed.

Made no difference whatsoever.

I figured out this is all due to the Reamed DLC (when I saw this thread). I patched ARM2/OA with the latest patch to 1.62, ran as administrator for both. Still no joy.

Creating a mod line shortcut that excludes allows me to start TOH, and I'll take a moment to compliment BI on the game itself, which I've spent alot of time playing now - but not the robustness of the install procedure. I should be able to be the dumbest of the dumb and still have this install "automagically" (reference to the BI page for Reamed).

So now I can play TOH - and also the Noisemakers and Hinds packs - but not Reamed. Which is annoying as that originally attracted me to buy it in the first place (though I appreciate the rest - the civil game is much more fun than I expected - but still).

Of course I've done the steam "Validate" integrity of data cache etc. Even renamed the Rearmed folder to force it to be re-downloaded installed.

I've tried mod lines that reference my ARMA2 install and Expansion folders - both with and without Reamed.

My suspicion is that because OA is installed in the same folder as ARMA2 (don't know why - it is) this screws up Reamed. I notice that the registry entries for paths to ARM2 and OA under the "Take On helicopters" hierarchy always have the wrong path. They do NOT match the paths for those titles which are in the registry. I've deleted the incorrect Reamed registry entries and re-installed (see above) and the new registry entries for the paths are still wrong. I've corrected them - and they go back to the same values when TOH is started with Reamed!

So, what can I do? I'm going to un-install ARM2 and OA - re-install them and the vast time consuming patches - and see what happens.

But If this doesn't work -I'm going to be using the word "automagically" with heavy sarcasm at every opportunity.

FreeLunch,

I suggest making a backup of your registry before you make any changes, and I would also be VERY careful about deleting Keys in there.

Now I have to ask, what were the values of the 'wrong' entries? Did the 'PATH' key say something like 'SOFTWARE\Bohemia Interactive Studios\ArmA 2'? Were these in the TKOH Key, or by them selves?

I think I may be onto something here...

I had a dedicated server running, everything was fine. Made a map rotation change, and started to receive this error again... I changed nothing else. This got me thinking; could this be a caching issue?

Does anyone know, off the top of their head, where the game/server keeps the cache? Is there a way to delete this, or a switch/flag like '-noCache' we could use?

It seems like, if there is a small error made, any further changes do not get accepted... My evidence of this, is the startup command-line I was using( the exact is not relevant ), when I removed ALL the '"-mod=blah;blah;blah"' entries, I started the dedicated server again, and it remained with my previous command-line settings..

when -mod is used, it uses the registry settings

if you change those in the modlauncher (from main menu),

it will save those in the TakeOnH.cfg - the class ModLauncherList section

the file is to be found in .\my documents\Take On Helicopters or Take On Helicopters Other Profiles

Hi everyone. I just bought TOH by itself and installed it and I can't play the game. I currently own both regular A2 and also OA and they are both cleanly installed with no addons at the moment. Whenever I try to launch TOH it says that my serial key is invalid. I can't get past the splash screen that says Bohemia Interactive. I've installed both of the ArmA games twice today with no luck. What can I do to get this to work. I mainly bought this game so I could use Seattle with the ArmA units, so I want to be able to use Rearmed.
