How To Stop AI Doing the Bounding-Overwatch ("Go, I'll cover!")?

Recommended Posts

When AI go into that mode where they run one-at-a-time covering each other, movement is really slow. How do I snap them out of that mode? Tried telling them it's 'safe', or to be 'aware' but they keep doing the bounding. I want to force them to run as they would at the start of the mission. I don't think there's a "move fast" option is there?

If there's a special fix for editor modes then great but ideally I'd like a normal radio command that works in the regular singleplayer + campaign modes too.

Use a different formation: either "Diamond" or "Column compact" will do.

Or you can just give a move order and they will drop everything and run there. Until they encounter an enemy that is.

That doesn't work for me, they still move one at a time.

Issuing move orders doesn't work. I gather that they're moving one at a time because they think there's an enemy nearby. Sometimes even when they have encountered an enemy, the best thing for them to do is to run fast where I tell them.

Is there no way to force them to run?

Believe me, both methods work. But don't expect your ai to act like puppets, they do have a mind on their own.

As I said, doesn't work for me. I have version 1.11.36734, which do you have?

If you don't expect your ai to act like puppets then I wonder how often does it work for you and in what circumstances? Do you just mean if there are no enemies left and your ai are still 'stuck' bounding then switching to those formations snaps them out of it?

Sorry, you never told your're on ArmA II. We were talking Arrowhead here; version is 1.62.95819 (latest beta). I really don't remember when I started vanilla ArmA II the last time, maybe two years. The formation thing was introduced in the early 1.5x versions of Arrowhead. I actually don't know if this change in code ever made it to ArmA II.

The orders you can give are:

7-1 Stealth

7-2 Danger

7-3 Aware

7-4 Safe

If the enemy shoots they automatically switch to Danger mode.

If they are in Danger mode they will do the bounding overwatch thing. In the other modes they don't do that

If the danger has passed you can can order Aware and they will always run to the next destination or order Safe and they will walk to the next destination

.

Since they automatically go into Danger mode on their own, it's best to leave them on Aware.

If they start to act weird, like not moving, crawling everywhere, etc, set them to SAFE (~-7-4) and they should act normal. Just be sure to put them back into AWARE (~-7-3) if you're heading back into a combat situation.
