Starting resistance

Recommended Posts

Considering that the main player in Resistance, Victor Troska, has been on the island for some time, you would expect him to be somewhat familiar with the layout of the island and some parts of it in detail.

So my plan is to install Resistance and then look for a .pdf map on the CD-ROM; as there was for the original islands (how many of you found those maps I wonder?).

I'll print up the map and spend a little time looking it over (provided BIS include one this time).

Then on to the editor. Find an airport (there must be one) and place a chopper and an open-top jeep (for good viewing). Then a player in a light plane in flight and out at sea.

Now, I'll fly around the island one or two times and then land (of course he could have arrived by boat!wink.gif. After that, I'll hop into the chopper for a little cruising around and some detailed looks at any interesting places (Hey he's a military man so he and some buddies may have gone hunting in the mountains using a civilian chopper to get them there. He's also probably had an habitual eye for the military possibilities of locations). Then back to the airport and into the jeep. Some leisurley tours along the main roads will give a good feel for entry/exit to towns/villages plus some nice horizons.

A couple of hours like this should simulate a few years of experience living on the island. Not too much, as it may ruin some nice game play later where unfamiliarity with the terrain or town will be fun. But at least a little familiarity so I get a mental picture of the lay of the land, etc.

Finally I'll get the campaign going and find out where he has been living. Once I know that, I'll stop and be back to the editor. He should certainly know his distric well in a car and on foot. Some more driving and a little walking will finalise things. Maybe a hiking trip to some likely place (you know, the trip he made last summer).

After all that....on with the ruskies! smile.gif

Boring... I'm going to be trying to land helicopters on the skyscrapers and stuff like that. Maybe some BASE jumping but I doubt you'll be able to open a parachute unless ejecting from a plane.

I am going to cry. I wish I had a decent computer.

I can barely run Operation Flashpoint on my machine as it is, without adding nicer graphics.

Sod that, I'm going off-road with my new motorbike! (abiet at poor fps casued by my under-powered graphics card and 128mbram - I am a student and can't afford to upgrade - yet!wink.gif

By tha way, I was disturbed the other day when I noticed that the bike in Resistance is almost exactly the same as the one that HRH Prince Philip uses to trundle around his estates on! Then its looking at all the new units and setting up a shooting range on a beach for the new weapons. Finally some experiments with the new code - do my old missions/models still work, can I land on the LST etc etc and finally the campaign. Roll on Friday!

Also to Benaksoy, I made a base-jumping script ages ago - it was crude but it worked quite well especially on the cliffs in Malden and the new islands that have been edited with WrpEdit. I'll dig it out for ya sometime if you want.

I remember reading about there being skyscrapers in resistance (I think it came from an online PC gaming magazine). Personally I'm sceptical that there will be skyscrapers on a little backwater agricultural/industrial island. From the screen shots I've seen, a couple of skyscrapers just doesn't seem to fit in. I also suspect it would be a little tasteless of BIS/CM to include skyscrapers in a shoot-em-up type game considering Sept. 11 (expect flames here). Although I'm looking forward to some larger buildings and trying to parachute down onto the top of them, I'd rather not see skyscrapers.

I used to do this in DF and LW, until the day someone had placed claymores all over the roof.

I agree, I think it's a good idea to get somewhat familiar with the island before jumping into the campaign. As you said, Victor should be quite intimate with his surroundings.  I think it's important for the realism, and immersion factor that you should enjoy this advantage in the campaign since after all, you are trying to defend your home.

It was a different story with the original OFP since you played the part of a U.S. Soldier, or in Red Hammer, a Soviet Soldier.  Those characters should have been more ignorant with how everything looked on the ground until they were sent in on their missions.

I'm going to spend some time in the editor too as soon as I get OFPR.  I'll just drive around on my new hog checking places out.  I'll probably try to stick with land vehicles so I'll get a more appropriate perspective, unless of course Victor is a helicopter tour guide like some rumors say.  If that's the case I'll do some extensive flying around as well.

As for those who think that kind of stuff is boring I totally disagree, I love the exploration aspect of OFP.  It gives it so much more depth.  I actually enjoy taking a spin around the islands once in a while without having to worry about getting shot.  Just skimming the trees in a OH-58 flying nap-of-the-earth with no other mission to worry about is great.  I love it.
