Game engines might be used to design "sandtable" decision-making exercises, but they'll never replace actual live fire training out in the field.  

I can't speak for the other services (where ya at, USSoldier11B?), but in the USMC we use an indoor weapon simulator called the ISMT (Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer).  We can simulate various weapons, and run interactive scenarios such as shoot/no shoot.  Simulators can help sharpen basic skills, but there's no substitute for the real thing.

With MILES you're using the actual weapons you'd use in combat.  Limited paintball range is another factor.  In CQB and MOUT training (where long-range shooting is rare), we use simunition.  Again, the advantage is that we're training with the weapons we'd actually be using.  Simunition stings a bit, but that's a form of negative reinforcement -- it'll teach you never to turn your back on or pass a danger area without clearing it.   wink.gif

MILESII-for open ground battles and Paintball (painball biggrin.gif ) for CQB. whats good in P-ball is that you'll NEVER forget the lesson!

computer simulations are good for large formation EX. were individuals arent so important.

No, no, "painball" is something completely different. It is a version of shuffle puck that is played on a pool table with billiard balls. Try playing that for more then five minutes and you'll see why it is called "painball" smile.gif
