Can't see the game when it launches

Recommended Posts

Hello!

So I've checked here and there but I can't find if anyone else is having this problem. The game launches and I can hear the music, even the pointer changes but I can't see the game. I just see the desktop. I can manage to get it to work in windowed more or less but for some reason full screen doesn't work, I just can't see the game at all.

I'm unsure what the cause of it is, I'm running on Windows 7 x64, Nvidia GTS 450, 4gb Ram. I start it in admin mode and all that through Steam but I still can't get it to work. I have had an issue where my screen seems to have locked itself in 30hz refresh rate and another game (Star Wars the Old Republic) had issues starting because of it. I'm unsure if Arma 2 has the same problem?

Appreciate the help!

Solved it, it's my HDMI cable. Apparently it does have to do with the refresh rate, the TV locks it to 30hz but the default is 60hz. I have to disable the HDMI output if I want to play, slightly annoying but it works at least.

Knowing which game you're talking about would help....

Assuming it is CO, look for the file ArmA2OA.cfg. In XP Pro for the DVD version (no idea if Steam is different) it will be in /My Documents/ArmA 2/

If the game is Arma 2, it will be called ArmA2.cfg. And so on.

Post that in a spoiler.

One one point, before editing any of the game config files, always make a backup.

On refresh rate, that is one of the factors that can be set in the .cfg. It should normally be the native refresh rate of the monitor at the resolution chosen. For my 1920x1200 panel it's 60Hz. Usually this would be set automatically in the .cfg; if yours reads 30 change it to the appropriate setting for your monitor. Right-clicking on the desktop & opening Properties > Settings gives you the resolution, then clicking on Advanced > Monitor will let you see at what refresh rate the monitor is running (for a flat panel, usually 60Hz). Do not set the refresh rate differently to that shown the "Monitor" pane for any chosen resolution.

4GB RAM seems a little small for W7 x64, W7 and 64-bit each increase the memory footprint compared to XP, might be worth searching this thread to see if others have found performance issues.

Edit - ninja'd by OP :)
