Cyper 18 Posted May 9, 2012 Arma 3 is not far away. I am not sure if I have money enough to buy myself a computer that will be able to handle A3. Fact two, I have never been able to experience arma 2. Fact is though, that I need a new computer now and as soon as I have the money I will buy me new one. I am a student, so do not have much money. Question is though... how many players will actually keep playing arma 2 after arma3's release? Wont a great deal of players dissapear? How many are generally active in arma 2/ao MP? How many people actually play the game mp and sp? I am really looking forward to get myself a computer that can handle arma 2 (my comp right now only have minimum requirements so I simply dont want to play it) and I look forward to re-create some of my over 40 singleplayer missions that were never released as a campaign, mostly because of various problems with my computer. Its on its last legs. Problem is.. I don't know if the effort will be worth it after arma 3s release because I don't know how many people that will be playing it, creating mods.. just keeping the game alive. metalcraze 290 Posted May 9, 2012 That depends on what you expect from ArmA2 MP. Something like 20 people is enough for fun missions provided they all play it. Unless ArmA3 will turn out to be another mess like ArmA1 was - the majority of players will move to it. Doubt this will happen instantly though. So far ArmA3 doesn't seem to offer much improvement over ArmA2 apart from better graphics, physX and nice fishes. And ArmA2 has mods that offer much more (like ACE) and a lot of people play them. I bet many will play ArmA3 campaign first and only so much MP since there won't be community-made stuff yet, while the general MP will be still played in ArmA2 CO for quite some time. CameronMcDonald 146 Posted May 9, 2012 There will be plenty of people modding for A3, I wager. There may be less people making units, due to higher standards and extra work required, but there will still be people scripting, making maps and scenarios, introducing fixes, user-made patches and all sorts of things. I also reckon you should save your money until after at least the alpha is out. See how people's computers are performing, wait a decent period of time so any quirks are ironed out/drivers have time to mature/a greater variety of hardware is tested, then either upgrade or buy a new rig. Anything else and you risk disappointment.
domokun 515 Posted May 9, 2012 If BI's record (OFP, A1 & A2) is to be believed, it will require months of patching for A3 to reach quality comparable its predecessor. I hope BI prove me wrong ;)
Cyper 18 Posted May 9, 2012 Well, I really need a new computer because I want to play A2. The system requirements that have been released for A3.. is those requirements minimum? Maximum? Due to the fact that I need a really good computer to run A3 I wonder if I should ditch A3 play A2 instead - but then - how long will it be alive? Is it even worth for me to re-create and release a campaign for A2 in 2012? Or is it waste of time? The best thing would be if it was possible for me to buy a new computer in a matter of a few weeks. But I am not sure what is required for arma 3.
tom3kb 15 Posted May 9, 2012 I think arma 2 will be alive many years after a3 will be released. Even now people are making missions/campaigns/mods for OFP (released in 2001) so you dont have to worry about a2. And making campaigns for a2 in 2012 and later, its not a waste of time. :)
domokun 515 Posted May 10, 2012 (edited) @Cyper: good advice from tom3kb. So build yourself a decent system now (don't go cheap but don't go expensive either) based on a fast (<3GHz) quad core (e.g. i5-3570K) with a recent GPU (Radeon 69XX/78XX or GeForce 570), 4+GB of RAM (Crucial are good) and a medium-sized (128+GB) SSD (Crucial are good). Provided that it is good quality, a 500W PSU will suffice (Antec and Fortron are good). That setup should allow you to play CO (A2+OA) at high-res (1920x1200) with most, if not all the settings at maximum quality (apart from View Distance). It should also allow you play A3, albeit at more moderate settings. Later, once A3 is more optimised and the community has a better appreciate of its architecture, you'll be able to make a more informed decision on an upgrade.
