Of course it is very deadly against infantry but when compared to even a LAW the automatic grenade launcher was somehow too "nice" Even the 12.7 AAMG felt more meaner. Jus my opinion though.<span id='postcolor'> Are you serious? Â Did you fire the same weapon? Â A good soldier doesn't worry about how "mean" a weapon feels but rather, how accurate the weapon is, what kind of range the weapon has, and what the effect is on the receiving end of the weapon's projectiles. Â The bottom line is lethality and the Mk19 has it in spades. Â The M2 is also a wonderful weapon that is also very deadly, but at medium to close range, while it can punch through light armor and put big holes in people it has nothing even approaching the massive distructive power of 40mm grenades. Â It's basically like a light automatic mortar with both direct fire and indirect capability. Â Anyhow... Â I can't argue with you if it didn't flip your boat, but it's just mind boggling to me that firepower capabilities of the MK19 in a tactical situation seems to be lost on you guys...or maybe it's not. Â I sure hope not. What country and branch of service did you fire it anyways Sniper? Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

Guest Scooby Posted June 18, 2002 They werent implying that weapon would be ineffective. They were just pointing out that firing with it does not feel that impressive as firing with other weapons such as Apilas, LAW and NSV feels like. AGS-17 is a great weapon. Though in Finland its use is mostly limited to urban areas because woods are so thick that you would end up injuring yourself and friendly troops.

Though in Finland its use is mostly limited to urban areas because woods are so thick that you would end up injuring yourself and friendly troops.<span id='postcolor'> I hope you are right. As for the problem with woods, I don't know about the AGS-17 but the MK19's rounds have a fuze that activates only after it clears a certain distance (I think 50 meters but I'm not for certain on that). The reason for the timed fuze is to avoid accidents such as the one that you mentioned. Still on occasion there are rounds that are defective and accidents do happen, but all in all they're not too dangerous to fire in thickly wooded areas although that's generally not a good idea as they may deflect upward or sideways and go past the minimum distance to arm and then explode on some friendlies. However at very close range, if you hit someone directly with one of those 40mm rounds it will either go through him without exploding (making a huge hole in the process), get stuck in them (again with a big hole in them) or it kills them from the massive blunt trauma. So at close range it turns into a machine gun with really big bullets. LOL! Gun crews also wear flackvests to minimize injuries if there is an accident where a defective grenade goes off at close range or while the weapon is being loaded or while a jammed weapon is being cleared. Last time I fired the Mk19 a weapon got jammed (when they jam they often jam badly) and we had to clear the area as a single person wearing a flackvest and kevlar helmet worked to unjam a round that had gotten stuck rather badly. That way if it exploded he would be the only one injured. Also during most training on the MK19 "flashbang" training rounds are normally used for safety as well. But even the flashbang rounds can still produce shrapnel when they go off. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>
cam0flage 0 Posted June 18, 2002 AGS-17 is a very dangerous weapon to its user when used in woods. Last year a finnish reservist died when he fired the weapon and the grenade hit a nearby tree and exploded. The grenade has a very sensitive mechanism for detecting a hit. It has been banned to fire AGS-17 since the accident. // cam0flage
