MJM0771 0 Posted June 7, 2002 What would be a good way to simulate Peripheral vision when playing OFP? I was thinking about adding 2 additional video adapters to my PC and connect a monitor to each. Then turning down the focus a bit on the two monitors. This way the middle monitor will be nice 'n clear, and the two side monitors would be a little blurry. This would make the player turn to investigate movement seen by "the corner of the eye". But then I realized "Damn! only one AGP slot!" Any other thoughts out there? karynova 0 Posted June 7, 2002 Damn! If I had two extra monitors and 2 3d video cards just lying around that I would be willing to set up only to be blurred out for marginally improved realism in one game I would start pinching myself.
mads bahrt 0 Posted June 7, 2002 Matrox new chipset Parheliaâ„¢-512 will support 3 screens, and hopefully it will have the power to get Matrox back in the 3D-game. Read some reviews when they appear and judge for yourself if it is powerfull enough for you.
MJM0771 0 Posted June 7, 2002 karynova - Good point. I dunno if it'll work anyway, cuz I think there may have to be a special video setting that would have to be implemented within OFP to ulitlize 3 separate monitors. Otherwise, there would be 3 monitors displaying the same exact thing, instead of the semi panaramic view. Oh well, just a thought. MJM
Mister Frag 0 Posted June 7, 2002 You wouldn't want to set the monitors on the side to produce a blurred image, because if they truly are in your peripheral vision, you won't see a clear image anyway. And if your eyes focus on those monitors even briefly, the image will still be blurred, and you'll soon have a major headache. If you have about US$ 23,000 burning a hole in your pockets, you can always get this display from the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog:
MJM0771 0 Posted June 7, 2002 NICE! Whats exactly what I had pictured in my mind! Hmmm... the next thing to figure out is how to get $23 grand! LOL!!! Seriously though, that would be awsome if those monitors were just a tad bit more affordable.
Benze 0 Posted June 7, 2002 That's one thing lacking in FPS...it's impossible to simulate peripheral vision... "What was that!" Well, you never say that, you either see it or you don't.
MJM0771 0 Posted June 7, 2002 Thats true. Guess we'll have to wait for the technology to advance to a point where we can connect our brain directly to the program. Imagine playing OFP in the matrix? Whoa!!!! Now THATS realism!
Pax Magellanic 0 Posted June 7, 2002 I remember the old quake had a console command that allowed you to shift the view up to 180 degrees... so you could see behind you but the screen was so messed up it would take alot of practice.. just give us ability to add a degree to the view so we could do perspective that way
Sethero 0 Posted June 7, 2002 I actually have the three monitors and 3 3D cards to use... unfortunately while implementing this, I torched my IDE bus controller. Ah, what a pseudo-science we practice.
ralphwiggum 6 Posted June 7, 2002 i really don't want to hook OFP to my brain 1.i always get shot..ouch 2.my brain is small.
dayglow 2 Posted June 7, 2002 Still with the Matrox card I wonder how much the 3 display mode would be used. I mean 3 monitors is a lot of money and a huge footprint, and 3 LCDs would be even more money. I've got a dual display capable card, but all I've got as a second monitor is an old 14'' from my 486. Not the best solution and I have a lot of other upgrades I'd rather do than buy a second monitor, especially b/c if I buy a new monitor it would have to be better than the old one, so it would cost a ton of money. eyes 0 Posted June 8, 2002 the temporal vision (time > movement > ie flicker) in the sides of your eyes is higher than the middle so if you actually had two monitors either side of you you'd get a major headache. (that perl of wisdom came from my HCI course ) If you were to do it by buying the matrox card you would have to use flatscreens to get away from refresh flicker.
