I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya. Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong. Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam. Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island. And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island. Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. max power 21 Posted December 7, 2011 The off-topic disrespect stops now. I do not care what your feelings are about this moment in history, or whether you feel it is relevant or not. Making blithe, backhanded comments is not appropriate, and will be handled in the future as spam. Any kind of spam in this thread from this point forward risks post restrictions and warning levels. I hope I have made myself clear.
PELHAM 10 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) A terrible day with a great loss of life. If you have never seen it I recommend Tora, Tora, Tora - a US, Japanese co-production detailing the story of the day from both sides. An excellent historically accurate film. The title is made up of the code-words that were used by the Japanese to indicate that complete surprise was achieved and is translated in the Japanese as "虎" or "tiger", hence making the code for achieved surprise "Tiger, tiger, tiger". British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was later to recollect "In all the war I never received a more direct shock. As I turned and twisted in bed the full horror of the news sank in upon me. There were no British or American capital ships in the Indian Ocean or the Pacific except the American survivors of Pearl Harbor who were hastening back to California. Over this vast expanse of waters Japan was supreme and we everywhere were weak and naked". Edited December 8, 2011 by PELHAM
hellfire257 3 Posted December 8, 2011 War... Is not nice. I'd like to be able to say that we'll never have to see such a war again. But unfortunately I cannot.
MF_Washburn 1 Posted December 12, 2011 I remember the first time I saw Pearl Harbor with Ben Affleck,I was like, "that is so horrible!" It's good that tragedies like these in history are being remembered through films, books, and documentaries - everyone knows our generation don't need to repeat the same mistakes.
