h8er 10 Posted November 16, 2011 Point the ladder with the cursor until you see a green triangle and then press middle click on your mouse button, or scroll the wheel until you see the option "climb ladder"
roguetrooper 2 Posted November 16, 2011 Trying to climb a ladder can be quite a pain. You need to catch exactly the few pixels that trigger the climb-symbol. When it is a large ladder whose major part is hidden in the ground, you can't climb it at all, since the symbol-trigger-part can not be accessed. That really should be fixed. There should be more freedom in triggering that symbol (3 metres 180° in front of it without the neccessity of aiming directly the few pixels that trigger it). The same for doors. Sometimes you fumble and fumble around and the icon does not appear. And when you have catched the open-door-symbol, the door hurts you when it opens in your direction :-/
metalcraze 290 Posted November 16, 2011 There are no "few pixels". Whole ladder has the selection zone. But it can be selected only when your invisible (or visible being the crosshair if you play on "don't hurt me" difficulty) scan-line points directly at the bit of its 3D model. Maybe if BIS used an invisible 3D box the size of the ladder instead of the ladder itself for selection detection it would've been more comfortable.
nycapken 10 Posted November 16, 2011 Thanks people, Are all ladders in the Arma2 and ArmaOA able to be climbed or just some of them? How about with the ACE@ mod? Ken ---------- Post added at 08:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:34 AM ---------- It seems to be ACE2 I am having the problem. I just went into Desert in Arma2 and climbed the Oil Rig with no problem. In Ace2 I was unable to get the green action symbol. Is there a command in Ace2 for climbing? Thanks Ken ---------- Post added at 08:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:47 AM ---------- Nevermind, Found the answer just use middle mouse in ACE2. Different action then Arma2. Thanks for the help. Ken
RocknRoll86 1 Posted November 28, 2011 The ladder climbing in this game is horrific. But 98% of the time you play you probably won't even consider looking for one. I've sniped from the tops of buildings and it doesn't really provide you with much of an advantage. What you'll be doing is giving up cover and concealment for view and range. Typically I'll last all of five minutes ontop of a building before something turns me into paste. And those tall spires/towers/smokestacks/etc? You'll waste a minute or two climbing up it. If you're not shot going up it then good luck at the top. There's no room to move if you go prone which means actually getting into place is a pain. If you're taking fire then trying to move away is nearly impossible.
NoRailgunner 0 Posted November 28, 2011 @RocknRoll86 snipers don't expose or reveal themselves. Try to avoid places that look like "good sniper positions" - its certain that your opponent will scan these places too. ;)
MissionCreep 12 Posted November 28, 2011 (edited) Depending on what the ladder does (up, down only or both up and down), you may need to look up or down until you see the green triangle or an action menu item. Press "enter" and you will climb onto it. Sometimes it can be hard to trigger the ladder action. The following usually works ... walk right up to the ladder and look up or down the ladder and you will see the green arrow. Sometimes it can take a couple of tries. I'm not sure if AI grants "amnesty" to people fumbling to start up or down a ladder, but I don't think I have ever been hit in when in this position (maybe it depends on the level of difficulty). For example, from my experience (can anyone else confirm?) it seems like an AI at the top of a ladder will not shoot down at you as you climb up. Of course once you get to the top or bottom, be prepared for action! Climbing vertically up and down a ladder often leaves you in a highly exposed, vulnerable and defenseless position, so you really should take extra care that you are not exposed while climbing or that all is clear before setting off. @RocknRoll86 snipers don't expose or reveal themselves. Try to avoid places that look like "good sniper positions" - its certain that your opponent will scan these places too. ;) A "good sniper position" is at best usually only good for one shot. If you can't move out of the position to safety quickly, you will draw fire like bees are drawn to honey. Edited November 28, 2011 by MissionCreep
