ArmA3 and GEO location on Limnos

Recommended Posts

i dont know if this question is asked already but :

Is there accurate ingame lat/lon info for Limnos?

Since the game is now on a real location, it would be nice to see accurate lat/lon information.

Thanks to google, we can make use of these real maps in the form of map overlays and geographical info about our future battlefield.

We could geo-tag our screenshots & movies at the spot they were taken. Large campaigns could be planned collaboratively online.

Its even posisble to collaborativly create waypoints in google-maps, and download/save them for use in your mission.

And finally if we could tap into the ArmAserver and access the game-data ( troop positions etc ) via Rcon, we could do some real magic with the maps!!

There are so many possibilities in using the geo-location. it opens a whole new dimension.

So please ,please , pretty please with cream on top, can somebody tell me if there is real LAT/LON info ingame??

Don't know if real LAT/LON will be used, but there certainly is possibility to set it using addons. I've placed Utes far up north myself, and it does get appropriate lighting changes (midnight summer sun and so on).

But can it be real? Isn't our island smaller than the real thing? Real data wouldn't be accurate all over the island. Real world data would to me also suggest real world grid data, which I think some of the addon community will object at (like how Hawaii is in the middle of a crossover). I haven't checked any real world military maps of Limnos though, but I don't expect 000000 to be conveniently located at the bottom left corner of the map (which they do in the game) :p

Ahh! ofcourse!

You mean a script that calculates the estimated lat/lon based on the arma map coordinates.

thats exactly what i needed to know!

Location of island is just a number in its config like any other. I cannot imagine any reason to set some unreal value. Remember that Arma series always had strong connection to actual location in engine, You may even use stars to navigate in all games. I cannot confirm anything, but tell yourself a reason, why would we set anything unreal :icon_twisted:

Well, both Utes and Chernarus share the exact same coordinate of Lat 45°N and Lon 30°E :p

lat = -1 * getNumber(configFile >> "CfgWorlds" >> worldName >> "latitude");

lon = getNumber(configFile >> "CfgWorlds" >> worldName >> "longitude");

Hmm, did anyone try to make a civilian GPS? Showing degree fractions or degree, minute, and seconds? Could be a fun navigational challenge in the game perhaps? :)

Btw, I learned navigating by the stars in Arma2. The northern hemisphere is simple, pretty much everyone knows how to do that (was even a mission in OFP), but to learn the southern sky I just made an addon that moved Chernarus way south. Finding the "south star" is a bit more tricky, considering it doesn't exist :) Probably a skill I will never have any use for, lol.

I dont know why, i actually cant think of something.

It was just a question, and the info i got so far is satisfying :yay:

Letz hope we can access troop location vectors from rcon.
