That right there shows just how much the reporter knew about aircraft. I've said it before: the state of our air force is laughable. Anyone remember that wayward weather baloon a few years ago? We sent two CF-18's to shoot it down, and it managed to get all the way to Russia tounge.gif

Hercules Jet. What a moron. Sometimes the newsmedia just...sucks.

One of my roomies best friends is an armament technician at Cold Lake. He says that they are afraid to put the dummy sidewinders on the CF18's during training, because the wingtip launch rails are so badly coroded on all of them. When he went to Kosovo, several of his compatriots suffered permanent back problems from manually hoisting 500 lb iron bombs onto the racks..while the americans laughed at them. No hydraulic bomb lifters. Wasnt in the budget.

I am not a militarist, but I think the state of the Canadian Forces is shameful. We cant properly defend our nation if needed... and even the stated goal of peacekeeping is jeprodized by the poor conditions.

Shame that it's not likely to change.

As for blasting the goverment for it's 70's technology fighters... Good lord..I hate the media. Did I mention that? The F-18 is still one of the most advanced fighters in the world.

To be realistic.. Canada doesent really need much of a military, canada and the US are like 2 peas in a pod, the US always has canada covered, I know that sounds pompus or whatever, but its true, despite the poking of fun and whatnot, out backwards neighbors to the north are actually worth protecting, good folks.

Holy shit, I knew it was bad, but not THAT bad. I have heard that before Kosovo, the Air Force bought a bunch of surplus laser-guided bombs and guidance systems that the Americans had left over from the Gulf war.

Well, my reserve unit is still wearing uniforms and webbing/kit that was developed in 1982. Our new CADPAT uniforms are *supposesd* to arrive in the fall of 2002, but I'll beleive it when I see it. The new webbing and ruck-sack have been developed but the CF can't find any contractors to make them. I have heard that we will get that stuff in about 5 years,...... I'll beleive it when I wear it. sad.gif

Our C7A1 rifles are another example of poor equipment. They are good when new, but ours are worn out and aren't as accurate as they should be. The upper and lower receivers have been swapped on most rifles, causing alot of 'slop' in the movment. I am no weapons technician, but a wobbly rifle with a worn out barrel is no good.

The Federal Liberals have been the worst for the DND since Trudeau's Leberals of the '70s, when the military DND HQ in Ottawa was amalgamated with the civilain one. Our forces have been reduced from 75,000 personell at the begining of the 90's to about 53,000 right now. There is actually a personell cap of about 50,000 that Ottawa wants to put in place.

What I hate the most is when Jean Chretien says that our military is as good as it has ever been, and that there is nothing wrong with it. He tries to make it look good when it is in the worst shape ever. Retired General Luis Mackenzie put it best when he said: "Why don't you just reduce our forces to 10,000 people, then we will be a world superpower" (I read that in a local news paper yesterday)

Bleh, enough of the ranting, off my soap-box for now. smile.gif

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how our politicians like to spend alot of money on inferior or overpriced (sometimes both) equipment.

Our ILTIS's cost about $30,000 per unit, we can sell them for about $7,000.

The LSVW costs roughly $80,000 per unit. They break down constantly. How constantly? About every excercise we go out on.

I wish.

It is an 'ILTIS' made by the 'Bombardier' company here in Canada. 'Bombardier' is famous for being the inventor of the snowmobile.
