hottehotte 2 Posted July 7, 2011 Hi there! A few days ago I rented an ArmA 2 CO 10 Slot Gameserver at Alpha Networks in the UK. I was tired of running a dedicated server on my Quadcore rig together with the actual game. Performance of Warfare (BE) together with ACE2 wasn't that great in the later stages of the session. That's why I thought renting a gameserver would improve things. But after playing a session of Warfare (BE) using nothing else than ACE2 in terms of Mods I was far from satisfied. My own Dedi-Server runs the mission with about 8-9 FPS when there're lots of AI in the field. The gameserver dropped down to 6 FPS as soon as the number of AI's increased during the session. So is there something in terms of comandline parameters I could use to improve performance? I cannot change any of the network settings, they're off limits. Or is the server just not powerfull enough? Maybe some of you who have rented a server themself could tell me how their system is handling this mission. I can't imagine that the performance is bad everywhere. So I'm waiting for your feedback ...
Nicholas 5 Posted July 7, 2011 My guess is that it's the server, nothing to do with ArmA. The better the server is, the higher the frames will be.
gossamersolid 155 Posted July 7, 2011 Server isn't strong enough. There's really no better way to rent a server than a full dedicated/VDS. You can ask the company about their clock speeds on the cores before you order. Don't order a server unless it's at least clocked at 2.8Ghz and is a newer xeon or i7. Otherwise it's a waste of money. RSF TheCapulet 59 Posted July 8, 2011 Most GSP's run their game servers on racks with 4-8 game servers per rack in virtual OS enviroment. This means that you're likely getting 1-2 cores with low Ghz, low memory, and shared bandwidth. For most of the standard fare game servers, this isn't an issue since they rarely run AI and are probably only generating a 100 square meter battlefield at a time. Arma 2, specially with BE Warfare, is likely running 100+ AI on a 140 square mile battlefield. There are a few GPSs who know how and what it takes to run an Arma 2 server. Outside of those guys, it's best to run on a dedicated high spec server. You can find these for rent, but they're usually lots of monies.
pendragonuk 0 Posted July 8, 2011 I have no issues with performance from my host. http://www.gamingdeluxe.co.uk/ We have a 20 slot server, nice bunch too Monthly costs are OK, and you get TS server some web space and stuff. We pay £25 per month for 20 slots. It's around double what you normally pay for a games server but it has to take in to account the cost of the overheads. I think the guys in the US pay way more than we do over here in the UK but I may be wrong.
Tankbuster 1744 Posted July 8, 2011 Shared hosting is always going to struggle with this series. It's really hard on server hardware. I've used shared hosting on both Windows and Linux and both were really not worth it. As others have said, if you're running more than half a dozen AI, or expecting 10 or more players, you need a dedicated box. Then you can put your own website, a personal TS server, remote desktop and what ever mods you like. Then you need a unemployed Finn to admin it for you. :)
SWAT_BigBear 0 Posted July 8, 2011 Then you can put your own website, a personal TS server, remote desktop and what ever mods you like. Actually it's better to have web sites on a separate system. Especially if the site offers downloads, linked photo's, video's & email. Unless you're paying for a top dollar dedi.
pendragonuk 0 Posted July 8, 2011 Well we run Evo on ours and there are countless AI. I know the buggers keep on shooting me There are several other servers on the same box as ours. Just have to have the horse power to run the servers.

Yeah it's also better to be stinking rich rather than being average, but since we're not all millionaires, A website + TS3 Server + Game server doesn't really make sense to put on seperate hosts. Our box has enough bandwidth, a super fast connection (100mbps+ up) and lots of resources (6GB Ram, 6 Cores @ 3.00ghz).
hottehotte 2 Posted July 8, 2011 Okay, I will think about all of your suggetions. Renting a complete dedicated server is more than I want to do / invest at the moment. Luckily I've rented my current server for just one month, so I don't waste much money. Whats's probably going to happen is that I will upgrade my rig to a 6 Core CPU in the next few month and I will keep my Q9550 Quadcore to host all my ArmA sessions. This should provide enough power to get good FPS. And I play with only a few friends, so Bandwith is no issue for me.
pendragonuk 0 Posted July 8, 2011 I have just had a look at the Alpha Networks pricing, anyone that charges the same for ArmA as he dose from BF:2 I think dosn't know the demands of the game... I know my lot is a little more expensive but you are not going to run into the same issues...

It's not going to affect the running of a game server.
Cowboy Pilot 10 Posted July 8, 2011 I would recommend looking at JestServers. Kevin (the owner) knows this game inside and out on the server end and what it takes to run it. His support is amazing and just got rated best in Customer Support for this quarter by GSP Ratings. He has EU servers now I believe... not sure what specific locations however. Let him know I sent you his way as I have had a long history with him and actually was one who helped work out the automatic ACE updates with Six-Updater when the ACE mod first came out. Best of luck sir!
