Why does Arma2 only allow me to choose low or normal video memory?

Recommended Posts

THREAD MOVED from ArmA forum...

Why does Arma2 only allow me to choose low or normal video memory?

I am running a ATI Radeon HD4850 with 512MB of GDDR3. According to everything I can find on here I ought to be using "high" video memory setting, but I only get options for "low" and "normal"... the same for texture detail.

I have tried several old video drivers 10.9 onwards and 11.0, 11.1 and 11.2 all to no avail.

I am running A2/OA latest stable build BTW.

I have no graphics glitches in any other games and all diagnostics report I have the correct 512MB VRAM. My CPU is a Q6600 (overclocked to 3.2GHz) and I have 8GB of main RAM.

Any ideas?

512mb video ram is quite low. I don't know if thats an issue but you can try...

Search for Arma2OA.cfg copy it somewhere else or change the cfg to something else.

Run Arma and see if that fixes it...?

512 is the amount of RAM that's actually on his card, but the game won't allow him to select anything other than low or normal.

He's tried deleting the cfg file and having the game recreate it, but with no difference.

Is it possible to see a pic of the vid settings screen? I might have a idea but would like to see a pic before making a fool of myself. :D

Ask and thou shalt receive...

Since I posted the original post' date=' I have updated my graphics drivers to the latest Catalyst drivers (11.2)... I now only get the LOW options for textures and Video memory!

BTW I just deleted my Arma2OA.cfg file and ran Arma2 again... As expected Arma2 recreated the file. Its contents are thus:

Yeah, that was one of the things I thought of when Rarius first mentioned it to me.

Might be way off here, but shouldn't that 'localVRAM' be showing about double what it is? Just for kicks, maybe try running the 78188 beta*. Completely separate from the vanilla game files (new beta .exe) and I believe there was a VRAM detection bug fixed fairly recently, but I don't remember which versions were affected.

*The last 1.57 beta I think.

I'm in TS with Rarius right now. He says he rolled drivers back to 10.3 and everything is lovely again. All option are available again.

He's been getting those micro stutters that some have talked about and he says those have gone too, plus no texture pop.
