Teach me how to make a server.

Recommended Posts

I recently got Arma 2, I it loved so much I bought all the dlc for it. I've joined a few good servers where people have customized it. They have all the vehicles from A-10's to the british Jackal. All sorts of weapons like the AA-12 to M4. Me and my friend spoke about making are own server just like those ones just for us. But the problem is I dont know a thing about setting up servers or customizing them. Codes and stuff are way over my head, So if someone could help me through it all it would be deeply appreciated. :)

First off you would need to decide where you want to host the server. Do you and your friend play locally via LAN, or over the internet? If it's the latter, do you have enough extra cash to fork out for a decent dedicated box, or are you planning to host it on your home internet connection?

My home internet. How come?

Because when it comes to setting up the server, the available bandwidth and processing power are very important.

So the next questions are:

1. What kind of internet connection do you have? Specifically your upload speed is important.

2. Do you have an extra computer at home where you would run the dedicated server, or do you plan to run it on the same box as you run the game?

3. What specs (CPU, RAM, GPU, HDD) does the computer on which you want to run the server have?

Sorry for the late reply.

I plan on using the same computer to play and run the server on.

Internet upload speed is 1020 KB per sec

RAM: 2.00GB (but I could upgrade it)

HDD: 1 TB

GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 925 Processor

From the benchmarks on my own server, that's not enough. Each client takes between ~500kB/s and 900kB/s, depending on what's going on, and even on a GigE line with 16 cores to work with I'm still trying to find the settings that make AI non-jumpy. I'm a system administrator by trade and Bohemia may have made a great game, but IMO their dedicated server is shitty(in it's current state). It's a PITA to configure, the errors it outputs are meaningless without more information, AI is single threaded, ./arma2oaserver restart results in 2 (or more) running server proccesses at the same time, etc etc. If you want to give it a shot though, http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/ArmA:_Dedicated_Server

PS: I also find it ridiculous that their server doesn't have the logic to realize when a client(IE, hacker) is spawning bombs out of thin air across the whole map without there being an aircraft there to drop them. Not the place for this gripe, but since I'm bitching I might as well get that in there.

Thanks man I'll take a look.

Plus I'm only gonna play the game with people I actually know, no randoms to hack it.

try just going to the multiplayer server list and hitting new at the bottom, make sure it isnt set for a lan game and change the name to what you want.

after that start it up. your friend should be able to find it by name.

Ive had 8 people (max) on my home connection and the same pc with pings on average of 200 with little to no issues. Just dont try and run something like domination or evolution and you should be fine.

You could just get a gameserver, thats wht a buddy and a few guys do gameserver all you need to do is get your ftp

setup add your missions and then hop on the server, all the missions you can build with a ton of features on them.
