Steam version launched but fails to start

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I had a quick look through the main steam thread, but there's over 100 pages of it!

My problem is I bought a game through steam. I'm sure this sort of thing doesn't happen with games that are wrapped in cardboard, I think it's something to so with the way they line up the molecules on the DVD's inside.

The issue it's caused me is that when I try to run any version I have purchased (ARMA II, OA or BAF) by whatever means (desktop shortcut, right-click on game list and select play, etc) I get the small white panel with 10 boxes, the first 8 (or possibly 9, I can't be sure, it's a bit quick) get ticks in, then the panel vanishes, and that's it.

I've tried verifying installation, re-installing, launching game in windowed mode, run as administrator, painting a pentagram around the monitor and praying to a selection of deities, all to no avail.

I suspect it's a graphics card/driver/resolution issue, as I have 3 22" monitors in an eyefinity group giving me a custom resolution of either 5040x1080 or 3150x1680 (depending on if I have the screens in landscape or portrait). I'm using a Radeon HD 5800 with the very latest drivers. However, I am just guessing.

The most annoying thing is that I have played it fine with a fantastic triple-screen view, but when I went to launch it the other day, it didn't run.

And I just bought my first joystick for YEARS just so I could fly the heli's better. So can someone please help me so I can sit behind my lovely 3-screen setup making "wukka-wukka-wukka" noises while the game is actually loading as opposed to crying every time I try and start it, all the while whispering to my new unused joystick "maybe this time Sticky, don't worry".

Thanks in advance (and well done for reading this far!)

Can no-one give me any pointers with this? Does anyone else have an eyefinity setup that's working ok?

Damn, the pentagram usually works for me.:p

If it suddenly stopped working, something must have changed. Strange as this might sound, did it stop working around the time you used the new joystick for the first time? Any other new peripherals or drivers? I ask because I've heard of a few people having otherwise inexplicable crashes with certain USB headsets and others devices plugged in.

I don't suppose it starts OK with just one display active? Tried rolling back a few driver releases? I have no experience with Eyefinity/multi-monitor setups, but way too much frittering around with ATi drivers..

edit: Oh, tried running a beta to see if it's a Steam problem?

Well, I didn't even think to unplug the joystick, it's nothing that amazing, but sure enough, it's the bloody new stick. Looks like it's a conflict with the default MS HID-compliant game controller drivers, I just need to figure out how to uninstall them so I can put the proper divers in their place. (it seems FS X has the same issue with this stick)

Thanks for your help Vohk, I shall just pray to you next time!

It's not a new model, I only meant that I've just bought it. It's a Speedlink Black Widow, got some decent reviews, and I like the configuration of having a single base unit but a seperate throttle lever, especially with the rudder control on the throttle.

And I especially bought this stick just to fly heli's in Arma, as I don't own any other flight sims. oh well.

Sent an email to Speedlink this afternoon, we'll see what happens.

If I have learned one thing in troubleshooting computers since a little before the 'TNT' was an awesome graphics card, it is that there is a disproportionately high chance a problem will be caused by something totally ridiculous, and highly inane. :D

Glad you got it sorted out. Well, mostly. ;)

Well, after a few emails back and forth, they reckon it's a duff joystick, and recommended I get it replaced. As I bought it from Amazon, it's quicker to get a refund and re-purchase, so I've ordered http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001DMUCAC/ref=oss_product instead (It's the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X in case that didn't come up)

Same sort of layout, and still pretty reasonable, I'm hoping I get less problems with this one.

Thanks to you chaps that took the time to reply, especially you, vohk.
