Well, we had a bad period from about 1800-1950, but profited from not being involved in the world wars. Before that we were one of Europes superpowers (about 1600-1750). About a thousend years before that we had the Vikings. Boy, you Americans are really a young nation smile.gif

Bush is about as sharp as a beachball. Anyone who admits that he has his wife help him out with 'The bigger words' in his speeches, does little to inspire my confidence in his intellectual prowess. Luckily he has guys like Powell and Cheney around to keep him in line.

The US has pretty much become less of a republican democracy and more of a corporate state. The beginning of the end was when the US Supreme court gave a corporation the same rights as a person, back in the late 19th century.

I'm not some raving communist, but the amount of clout the average large corporation wields in the US is horrific.

But as systems go, the one the Americans have is pretty decent. You can express your crackpot opinions and fear only the withering looks of your neighbours... not whether some death squad will turn up and take you away biggrin.gif

This is what we keep trying to tell you people lol biggrin.gif

We arent perfect, but we try, and do an okay job.

I am, however, worried about the direction our country has taken since the WTC and Pentagon attacks... we truly are at risk of losing our Constitutional freedoms... but we are workin on it, lol

No shit. Since when does:

Arab Loonies crash planes into buildings = Take guns away from law abiding Americans.

Talk about John Rocker logic.

I was thinking more along the lines of Congress being on the verge of requiring a national ID, people being held as 'material witnesses' without being charged with any crimes for longer than the writ of habeas corpus allows, and the inability to speak out against the administrations policies because you will be labaeled 'anti-American'

I think you should blame high school kids who snap and blow away 6 of their classmates for gun control

ok then: Insecure adolecents that shoot up schools with illegally obtained firearms that they are not old enough to buy = Make it harder for law abiding citizens to obtain firearms legally.

So how does this combat gun related violence hmmm?

Don't go so far as to say that Sept 11th didn't spawn a new frenzy for the liberals to push through some more "feel good" gun control legislation, because they did. Dear old president Bush managed to kill those bills though.

All those other things are true as well. Except you have had a national I.D. your entire life. What do you think your social security number is really for? Certainly not for receiving federal retirement benefits.

How about the flag flying debate: In the "People's Republic of Boulder" here in Colorado, an area infested with ultra-liberals that is only second to Unv. of Cal, Berkley they banned flying the American flag at the Boulder Public Library because "it might offend students of Arabic decent." What kind of shit is that? If you don't like it, get the f&ck out of our country.

Yeah, you have a point there. Left-wing folks are abusing the Sept. 11th attacks to enforce their own views and ideas upon the world.

Personally, I think America would go to shit if it was lead by a socialist party. If I were an American, I'd be happy with the current government since it chooses to protect the rights of it's own people first instead of always looking at the rest of the world before they do something.

And that's something other countries, including mine should do as well: care about your own people first and then care about what the rest of the world thinks about it.

Oh, dear, you never listen do you? Because 80% of your so called 'illigal' guns are former legal guns that have been stolen. In the case of the school shootings: those were the kids' parents' guns, that were legal.

This is no different then anywhere else in the world. Physical person <=> juridical person <=> corporation. A juridical person can be a real person or a corporation and they have the same rights. That's how it is in Europe too.

What, do you think that when it is any different in any other democratic country in the world. I think that your problem is that you are very isolated on your continent and get only feedback from your own culture. Therefor you are prone to believe what government propaganda says - i.e that you should be happy to live in America because it is the best country in the world in every respect. I think that you are being fooled. You have social problems that Europe got rid of 100 years ago because of a obsolete dinosaur political system.

Freedom of speech and all those rights are old news. It was really great at the time of the French revolution (when you ripped off the ideas of the French and put it into your constitution), but not today. The world changes all the time and you are lagging behind more and more.

I find it incredible just how many threads about different topics can turn into gun control debates. It's absolutely incredible.

On a sidenote, I will shortly be going for my gun license, for hunting purposes. I've found a few friends who go hunting on a semi-regular basis, so I'm very keen to get my license, a gun, and go hunting

Late jump in.

I have to agree with Denoir.

Sorry USSoldier11B, You are a prime example of soldier, somewhat apart from normal joes.

Ok, first let me talk about Gore-Bush election result. Gore won popularity vote. no question about it. that means that many americans who voted favored gore over bush. Furthermore, many ppl said they liked Bush for his face, not issue. Gore supporters were impressed by his issue handling.

now, what's difference btw socialism and capitalism? not much to me. I really don't understand why EU countries sacrifice their economic developement over overly socialist agenda, but that does not mean they are loosers. If anyone ready communist manifesto by Marx(Karl MArx, not Richard Marx), he states that evolution of communism will follow after capitalism is exhausted. Socialism tends to be closer to it than capitalism that US has.

But what is socialsm and capitalism's common thread? They both encourage economic activity, but differ in distribution of wealth. most of you will be surprised to learn that even under communist states, there is economics class in college. What happens here is that socialist nations tend to distribute wealth equaly to everyone(or tries to), while pure capitalists tend to give reward to those who succeed.

Which one is better? can't tell. Socialism usually incorporates social steadyness in sacrifice of economic growth.

ok let me stop here...i'll edit it...need to go somewhere

I never said it was right, I was just pointing out that chool shootings have been the main catalyst for passing new gun control legislation, not Sept. 11.

And yeah, we do have SS numbers, but do you have to show your Social Security number every time you cross a state line, board an airline, or go through customs? Nope. However, there is new legislation in the House and Senate that is proposing a national id of some kind, that you would be required to pull out when engaged in these sorts of activities

Thank you Ralph, I entirely agree with you.

There is a classical example from population dynamics that handles the issue of doing what is best for yourself vs. doing what's best for the group. If we only act out of self interest with no consideration to others we will sabotage each others attempts to succeed and therefor hamper the overall progress. If we only act out of common iterests we will let good opportunities pass by and therefor hamper the overall progress. The trick lies in doing what is best for yourself while taking what is best for everybody in consideration.

Capitalism takes a Darwinian approach on everything; the strongest wins. The problem with that is that it isn't very compatible with our customs and moral requirements. You don't kill your neighbour because he has a good looking wife and you are stronger than him. So capitalism isn't very compatible with our core set of values. We need these values to survive as a population.

Communism takes an egalitarian approach on everything; everybody is equal. The problem with that is that it isn't very compatible with human nature. Greed and ambition are core human mechanims. We need that to survive as individuals.

Free market economy is currently the only economical system that works after a fashion. It is very inefficient but leads to development and good quality products. The down sides of it are that the basic idea of free trade gets perverted into an unstable system where you have to improve to survive (a good profit for a company is not enough, it has to do better then it has the previous year or its stocks will plummet).

We have also several common traits and needs as human beings. We have the universal needs for safety, security, healthcare and so on. Therefor we have governments to take care of that. That part is about the common good that we all have our interests in. That is the Socialist part.

What is the ideal solution then? Well some form of Free Market Socialism, is the obvious answer. The question is where you put the limits on the capitalist and the socialist part. There is no country in the world that has only one part. IMO the Soviet union was too far off on the socialist side while USA is still today far off on the capitalist side. But, as I said before, things are changing. W. has in his program much more social concerns then his father had. The fact that Gore won the popular vote despite his lack of charisma and appeal shows that there is an interest in the development on the social side.
