That really is dependant on

How many players you want to cater for

What type of game, eg pvp or coop

What bandwidth connection you have

How much diskspace you need and any raid configurations you may want to run

For example, as a ballpark figure, you should be looking at

1) CPU: The fastest quad core you can afford

2) Ram: 4-6gb

3) Hard Drive: 500gb (for the O/S, other apps and the OA install itself)

4) GPU: Not used on a dedicated server, so onboard is fine for the o/s stuff

If you add raid to this, then obviously you need the appropriate matching hard drives, possibly battery backup

Hello,

Thanks for your answer.

I was thinking about a server for max 16/20 players.

What type of processor do you meen? a normal Desktop processor or a special server processor? And does it realy needs to have 500gb? i think that 80gb will be enough because there will only 1 CTI Warfare BE mission on it.

And how much upload bandwidth connection should i have for 16/20 players?

Thanks in advance.

A server needs an operating system, add to that a decent sized swap file on your hard drive plus all the others apps like teamspeak etc and 500gb should be ample for a very very basic setup. 80Gb just wouldnt do it and the price of a decent sized hard drive isnt much.

CPU, yes an I7, or even an older quad core would do

If you have the funds, then you can spend anything up to £1000+ for a xeon

OA from a server perspective is all about CPU power and bandwidth.

You then have to think about where it is hosted.

If at a colo, then size is cost, so a 1u rack server chassis is what you need to look at. If you are going to host from home, then bare minimum you need a 10mb line. Colo's run anything from 100mbit to 1gbit

To give you an idea on what you can get out of a very powerful system

We run a zeon X5570, with 6gb ram and a raid setup for our drives, this allows us to run 2 game servers and 1 test server at the same time, plus alot of other apps. Thats a £1000+ CPU. You dont need anything like that for 1 20 player server, so a cheaper I7 would be ample and still powerful. AFAIK, most smaller community servers run desktop cpu's

So

What is your budget?

Where do you intend hosting it?

What monthly running costs can you afford?

Will you be self building or buying preinstalled?

Is this a long term plan or just for a few months?

Spend your money on the processor - i do not agree on the 500gb hd - nor is raid needed, there is very little disc-access in running an armaserver. The operating system + the game will easily fit on a 80gb hd.

I did not say RAID was required

and doesn't it depend on the other apps that one is running as to the size of the hard drive that is required. The cost of the hard drive is also negligeable so keeping it as close to bare minimum and then finding you need more space could mean a lengthy and costly journey if it was hosted at a colo.

I would therefore say if you wanted to sail that close to the edge, have 2 drives, one for the o/s, which means if you do need more HD space, you can simply add too or replace the second drive without having to format and re-install you 0/s drive. Simpler answer, no raid, get a larger drive than you anticipate

Future use such as hosting addons, and other options that you may not even have thought of at this stage such as FTP server, Firedeamon, SVN (These are all possibilities if your community expands) require more disk space and your Swap file space on your o/s drive needs to stay free.

Most communities have a website, be it just forums or a full blown cms. If the website is also hosted on the game server although not the ideal setup, you also need to take the storage space for this into consideration

I agree with the 500 gig, we have a lot of stuff on ours that isnt even game related, and THEN theres the "what if" what if you want to use it for storing files, addons etc etc and as he said the price difference if negligible.... AND btw, we use a QX 6600 and that is fine for our needs (we play mainly PvP though, can run 2 servers if we need easily but we like to keep it simple and run the one 32 player)

BUT

If you are only after a 20 man server why build one, just rent a game server from a company like www.alpha-networks.co.uk much cheaper :)

In addition, I think it is best practice to have a "Master" OA Install, which is the original installation, and make a copy of this to use as the gaming virtual server. This way if you end up screwing something up, deleteing files etc, it's a simple copy to get you back up and running again instead of a reinstall of the game.

It's always nice to have a pristine Vanilla version just incase......

Thanks for all the answers and information.

I don't want to have a server with teamspeak etc, i am not starting and i don't have a community.

I can get my hands on a Compaq Proliant ML370 G3 Rack server

specs:

2x XEON 2,8 GHz/533 MHz Processor with 512 Kb L2, 1 Mb L3 Cache

1536 Mb RAM (ECC) (6x 256)

HP Smart Array 641 Raid Controller (SCSI) 64 Mb Cache

Embedded ATI Rage XL Video Controller

Could this server run one arma 2 OA dedicated server? with only warfare be mission.

I'm not familiar with servers specs...

Thaks in advance
