Pre-noob question...

Recommended Posts

First off I apologise for my ignorance. My ARMA 2 game will arrive tomorrow, ordered it instantly after watching some videos of real tactical teamwork and voice communication.

But now... my question is what's the story with the multiplayer having AI units? Isn't the idea of online multiplayer to play against real people. AI is a big turn-off for me, it is something I usually only do if i've lost internet connection and am bored.

But it was cheap as chips and I'm hopefully going to be pleasantly surprised.

Any info you guys can give a NOOB is greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Many of the multiplayer missions are coop missions where a team of players kills AI. Some missions are so big that both sides need AI to fill up the scenery. Of course, there are also pure pvp missions where AI doesn't exist.

What they are not sexy enough for you?, i think you'll find some real hot ones in the game unders civillians.

AI arn't that bad especially when they act like live players sometimes.

you will need the Operation Arrowhead Expansion to get the real benefit

I dont think so, I think you should try Arma 2 then get the demo for OA and go from there,

obviously the demo dont give you the full cake but since your new to this type of game,

well BIS series games, and none like them, then Arma2 stock would be a good start.

alot of things you can do in the stock game without having the need for expansions and such,

theres plently of addons, mods, islands, scripts, templates, codes, commands, tools, editing, mp type games, ect.,.,..,.,.,.,., ya I can go on and on.

But whatever floats your boat, salior :)

The game has improved greatly since OA which is why I suggested it, Also there is very litttle choice of MP servers out there only running Arma 2 so OP would not get a decent choice of PvP games.....

Not like there is much pvp in OA to begin with but yeah.

Hi Mercer81

You can play PvP or Coop or an amalgamation of the two.

But do not judge ArmA AI on the scripted "AI" of other FPS. The amount of people who begin ArmA and get their arses kicked from one end of the islands to the other, and ArmA islands are BIG, is amusing.

And that is before you use MODs like Zeus AI.

Also if you cannot fight BIS AI you are going to find it hard to beat a well trained ArmA team who can best the ArmA AI.

Be warned the AI are going to kick your ass for the first month utill you unlearn all that crap other FPS taught you.

Well that depends really on whether you set out to solely challenge yourself or challenge yourselves as a group.

If you just want to purely test your own mettle, then yeah, there will be times where you can unrealistically outwit the AI, and a human adversary will always be a more satisfying opponent.

But there's a different kind of satisfaction from working together as a cohesive unit to complete a mission, knowing that you did your bit and didn't fuck up. For that style of play, AI enemies do a great job, assuming the mission has a good author.

Of course you can still have large scale adversarial with both sides played by humans, as some of the ongoing tournaments prove. But they'll always take a little more organisation, a stricter set of rules, and twice as many people.
