More editable area for Desert and Utes

Recommended Posts

Sometimes BI declares that the spread of Desert map is infinite.

Yes,It is not a lie.We can drive on the desert until be tired, but then we can't manage whole infinite space of the desert.

Player is permitted only 2km*2km to edit the map so it's difficult to recreate large scale combat.

I think there is no necessity to improve the map itself, even 2D map/texture.

Just releasing limitation of editable map scale makes the Desert map more useful.

I see your point, and agree but theres alot of other maps to download and play on. That have a decent scale.

you can have large scale battles heres a nice desert map with ruined cities,

probably take you an hour or more to drive this thing:

+1 on this one! The Town Generation module would do all the work and you would have a replayable environment. Don't forget to add some streets and roads though!

The point of these maps are so we can have a small map that loads fast where we can test stuff out on. Trust me, when you get into dialog design (and all its endless crashes), you want something that is fast to load. They're not made for large scale wars at all.

What is wrong with Takistan (plenty of decently sized desert areas) or Chernarus (plenty of Utes like landscape)?

Indeed, there are plenty of large and well made maps created by the people in this community.Of course I like it.

We have no problem when We play them alone.

But when we making SP/MP mission, weather the map is made by BI or not becomes very important factor because everyone who are going to play a mission doesn't have user made map.

As you said, the best advantage the Desert map has is fast to read.Yet no need which is small.

We can already use outer space of these small maps.

For example, unpbo a bandle mission "Trial By Fire" and you will see some chopper's waypoint is placed on black empty area of Utes in 2D editor.

I think the limitation of the map editable area has no relation to its performance.

What makes map heavy is not how huge the area we can place the object in the editor but how many objects placed permanently and how terrain is complicated.

Outer space of Desert has no object and its terrain is repetition of simple pattern.Utes is surrounded by the Green sea.

So I can say the bigger is the better:D

I agree with the OP. I have always wondered how large a map you could have in Arma. I would really like to see something of BIS quality, 4-times the size of Takistan, with less rugged terrain. Something more geared toward vehicle battles would be great.

Don't get me wrong, I like Zargabad for urban combat and am thankful for Utes' quick loading for testing, but a really large map or extended desert map would be great. Doesn't need alot of detail, just random rocks/shrubs/hills and the town generator and objects in editor would do the rest. There are still huge open deserts with nothing in them, correct? The Iraq/Saudi border is largely empty, isn't it?

On a similar vein, it'd be great if the roads went on a bit further on the OA and BAF maps. Seems strange having purpose built terrain alongside a suddenly ending road. Having them lead off for a mile or so out of sight would be much better.
