Ether Dragon 0 Posted April 25, 2002 I was trying a mission with a friend last night - the co-op Malden desert mission where you have to stop a convoy. I captured the airport, hopped in a MI-24 Hind-D, started up the engine, and promptly blew up when I started to take off. I was told that I'd been killed by friendly fire, but there were no friendly - or enemy troops around. The statistics page afterwords said that I'd killed myself. Given the finality of death and the time involved in getting to that point in the mission, I haven't had much opportunity to retry it. Can anyone tell me if this is a bug, some kind of scripted event, or...what? I don't want to spend a lot of time trying to do the strategy if it's programmed not to work. FetishFool 0 Posted April 25, 2002 lol, your topic title gave me a good laugh. Then I read your post, and it makes sense now It might be a scripting problem. Don't call it a 'bug'. Just disect the mission in the Mission Editor and see what's supposed to happen.
SpaceAlex 0 Posted April 25, 2002 I'm pretty sure that AI (BMP, T72, other tank) shot you. It always says friendly fire if u die in a chopper. Â

That BMP was hidden somewhere. I'm pretty sure.
Ether Dragon 0 Posted April 25, 2002 Well, I misspoke in my original post. I took out all of the enemy units at the airfield (2 crewmen, 1 shilka, 1 T-72,) but my friend was suffering lag, and apparently failed to stop the convoy from reaching the airfield. About a minute after my death, as I was circling in gull form, the convoy, lead by a BMP rolled into sight. My first thought was that perhaps the BMP had shot me from afar, but the announcement that it'd been friendly fire ended that line of thinking. You've just renewed it and put my faith back in my plan. Thanks. =)
Mister Frag 0 Posted April 25, 2002 I think what happened is that the enemy armor took you out because it magically deduced that there was a resistance pilot at the controls of the Hind, but the "You have been killed by friendly fire" message was based on the fact that a Russian unit shot down a Russian chopper. Anyway, I play and win the Desert Ambush mission the same way. We usually take the truck down along the beach, and then come up to the fence on foot after stocking up on RPGs for the AT weapons we steal from dead Russian infantry. We coordinate the next phase closely using the built-in voice, hitting the Russian helicopter crews and guards at the same time as the Shilka and T-80. Once we have at least one Hind, we are unstoppable, and head for the town.
IceFire 0 Posted April 25, 2002 You probably werent killed by the initial impact of the BMP rocket. You were probably killed by the chopper flaming off split seconds later. This would explain the friendly fire thing.
Ether Dragon 0 Posted April 25, 2002 If you're interested, Mr. Frag, here's my own approach to capturing a HIND. It only requires one person, and goes very quickly. 1.) Use a LAW soldier (or grab an RPG after starting.) 2.) Grab a Satchel Charge from the ammo crates. 3.) Drive the truck NW to the far side of the air field. 4.) Run up within a comfortable range for targeting the two crewmen (use the brush for conceal if using iron sites.) 5.) Kill crewmen - Shilka and T-72 will be oblivious as long as you don't accidently shoot either one! 6.) Use buildings for cover run up behind T-72 and place Satchel Charge. 7.) Run behind buildings and get in sight of Shilka. 8a.) RPG Shilka 8b.) Detonate Satchel Charge. (Doing both should take about a second.) 9.) Skip over to Hind while singing your favorite ditty. 10.) Blow up while taking off in Hind. What the???

Tex -USMC- 0 Posted April 26, 2002 The event of a helicopter exploding during takeoff is generally hazardous to both the helicopter, pilot and crew, and therefore it is not recommended.
LauryThorn 0 Posted April 26, 2002 But hey remember: There are no bugs - just undocumented features. (that is pretty old one, isn't it?)
R. Gerschwarzenge 0 Posted April 26, 2002 (Yes it's old) My friend's car has alot of undocumented features too.
Ether Dragon 0 Posted April 26, 2002 Which begs the question, "was a manual even included with the Yugo?"
