Arma 3 Performance vs. Arma 2

Well firstly, if it was a 6 core CPU and it was running smooth because of that then that would indicate multi-core optimisation so potentially supporting the case for improved performance, relatively, over A2? Yes I'm pretty sure it was GTX580.

Arma 3 Performance vs. Arma 2

Ah, naive youngsters. Yes it "should" be fixed but Far Cry 2, an old AAA title from Ubisoft, features a Memory Leak even after the most current patch. And that was released in 2008. Fortunately that game used more than 2GB of RAM, even back then.
  3. Wow I've never seen that before in Arma. Given the focus on realism you'd think this would be on the "to implement" list for BIS. If anyone has ever played Far Cry 2 (and I have, a lot) this was done very well. The whole game you were ever only in First Person mode - and when in a vehicle even you could unfold your map in 3D space in your lap to read. Here's a screenshot. http://thelure.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/far-cry-2.jpg (525 kB) On topic: this would be so great especially given how cheap you could pick up a 15" square LCD
  4. And that's a problem why? More money for BIS. The best thing about Wasteland is that its a great drop-in drop-out game mode for those who don't have the patience or time to play scheduled Arma 2 matches. Hah - I can see WasteLand potentially spinning off like DayZ did. Although probably won't go standalone due to the distinct lack of zombo-factor. Maybe a BIS optimized DLC version? Or it could be a DayZ standalone mod (bare with me) due to the unique MMO server architecture they are building that is adaptive to the survival gameplay i.e. looting etc.

Wait the gamescom build had memory leak issues? This is going to be a real problem at 32 bit, given the max 2gb of RAM.

Arma 3 Performance vs. Arma 2

Re: Computer power comment - of course it does it was a joke Re: Multi-threaded optimization. Yes. Do we know if there is optimization that has been worked on? Re: Tesselation - I thought I could remember in one of the videos (either underwater or infantry) that the dev commented and said "note the tessellation on the rock". I could be wrong as I just tried to find it and couldn't - anyone else remember this? Re: PhysX - I know but I am saying that PhysX does not have a huge performance impact it is instead just an nVidia proprietary tech term.

Arma 3 Performance vs. Arma 2

Look I have played a lot of BF1942, BF2 BF:BC2 & BF3 and a lot of A2, OA, BAF, PMC & ACR and I think I can say I'm unbiased. You linking a crappy screenshot of Wake Island, arguably one of BF3's worst maps (dgmw one of BF2's best), is just flaming. Ignoring map size you can't say that Arma 2 (any expansion or user Island) holds a candle to the visual fidelity of BF3's Firestorm or Caspian maps - both of which are big maps (albeit not as big as Takistan/Chernarus). You have to face the fact that Frostbite is far better optimized than Arma's engine (and of course better resourced thanks to EA). Arma 3 Performance vs. Arma 2

Okay - although Arma doesn't tend to abide by the normal laws of computer power (20FPS when BF3 on High will give 50FPS lol) - for those who know a bit about modern gaming tech and its demands I'm not expecting it to run much worse than Arma 2 on modern cards. Arma is infamous for being CPU heavy - for those with an i7 processor it is hard to comprehend Arma requiring much more heavy lifting. BIS have made the jump to DirectX 11 (from DirectX 9). This will give much better lighting tech without much performance hit - this is something that makes the Arma 3 screenies and video look so much better. Shadows look a lot better too and not as jagged. If BIS have used tessellation (which I think they have) this will give a MUCH higher perceived polygon count without equivalent FPS hit of using actual polygons - especially useful for rocky outcrops etc. Although it does have quite a performance hit - so hopefully its toggle-able or reduce-able. If you have a good graphics card PhysX won't tax much of your FPS. Batman Arkham series was a heavy user of PhysX (for Batman's cape and atmospheric blowing leaves etc) and toggling it had a marginal performance hit Don't get me wrong - the game will be more demanding - but the FPS impact won't be huge if you are currently on an i5/i7 & GTX560+ or Kepler GPU. Of course the Alpha/Beta will be less optimized to exacerbate things

    Arma 3 plans for 2013

So in my office job when I'm bored I go to arma3.com on my smartphone (blocked on work computer). And it usually tells me INTEL REDACTED. I keep doing it anyway. Today I went there and got a "site overloaded" error message. I quickly went to PCGamer.com to confirm my EXCITED suspicions and instantly grabbed my credit card and started hitting refresh every 1 second on arma3.com!! SO STOKED!!! too bad I can't pay yet and had to tuck away the credit card melting in my grip. I don't think I'm going to get the Supporter's Edition but I think the regular edition is priced far too low - so going to grab the DDE despite not having any need for the Digital Extras - just want to give teh moneh to BIS!! I'll probably end up buying all the DLCs anyway like I did for A2 and giving more money to BIS in the long run this way!! Everyone, freaking out about the Euro pricing - don't worry Steam translates pricing into local currency USD/GBP/AUD/NZD (although unfortunately sometimes taking advantage of local market inflated pricing - true in NZ and AU I believe). Not sure if BIS will do the same on the bistore though. P.S. BIS you are truly on of the best developers - don't ever sell out like DICE did :'( ---------- Post added at 22:05 ---------- Previous post was at 21:55 ---------- This. Dunno wtf that guy was on about? Gets alpha, beta and then final game for peanuts. Complains that alpha is moddable.

Poll: Will you buy Arma III?

Yeah - this is a fair point. Especially seeing as BIS already have the distribution network (although to be fair their digital footprint is small, and gaming high street retail is collapsing left/right and center). Then why do you think they did it? My best professional guess is this: Steam said that they would take a lower margin/cut if they got exclusivity because they know a potential DayZ situation could occur. Also maybe a multi-game deal with Valve across Arma3 and DayZ.

Poll: Will you buy Arma III?

Hi Demon Cleaner - you raise some good and valid points. However, many of your comments I'm sure you know are very unique to you - especially in regards to social features. Anyway, realistically it is more likely that BIS will cease to exist before Steam in my opinion... (this is common sense, but also happens to be my full-time vocation, assessing creditworthiness). In the event that Steam tipped over, I am 100% sure you would be able to continue to play your game. Steam firstly has huge brand value and IP so would likely continue trading. Worse case scenario and it doesn't, I am certain BIS would back their (indirect) customers by coming up with an alternative solution so you can continue using the software you paid for. As a hardcore user that I'm sure you are, I would caution against taking the middle finger approach to BIS (which you may feel they have given to you). After all, you don't know the full circumstances behind the decision - just think, those same people that make the games that you have loved so much to date, may actually know what they are doing when it comes to their chosen profession and field in life.

Poll: Will you buy Arma III?

Steam seems to me to be a natural monopoly - one that functions best with one dominant player - in this case only because Steam/Valve while (probably) hugely profitable, is also one of the most awesome, down-to-earth and benevolent companies I've seen. You read the blog post, didn't you? Without Steam you would be seeing a 2014 release - is this REALLY what you'd prefer? BIS did this out of choice.

Poll: Will you buy Arma III?

Firstly, I think a poll on "will you buy Arma 3" posted on the BIS forums for... Arma 3, may be a touch biased. Secondly, re: the Steam thing - if you actually give half a care about Arma at all you would probably buy Arma 3 even if it meant signing over your soul to the devil or something worse like using XBox Live for Windows... If you are keen enough on Arma to (a) have a BIS forums account but (b) you say you won't buy it out of protest to it being on Steam exclusively, either you are lying or you are childish. Oh and a couple years ago in NZ I bought Arma 2, BAF and PMC all separate retail boxes non-Steam. I then moved country to the UK, and when en route lost the DVDs somewhere, bought a laptop in Toronto and then re-bought A2 CO on Steam while in Washington DC. My point being - aside from the fact I double-paid, which in this instance is fine because its BIS - had I owned on Steam in the first place I wouldn't have had an issue - Steam goes with you wherever you are in the world, whatever PC you may have. My other point being - both methods of ownership are equally valid and all the complaints have been more or less addressed - i.e. running in Offline Mode, Retail DVD still available for install, BIS having direct access to patch the game etc. Furthermore, my "Steam" version of Arma 2 CO still launches fine without Steam using PlayWithSix etc. Who's to say A3 won't.
  14. Sorry - late to the thread but I finally folded and bought ACR to (a) support BIS and because (b) I just can't wait for A3 and need a fix. Re: this mission - It is overall a good mission, these are my thoughts It is not very clear what you need to do here - obviously the ultimate goal is to destroy the base which ends the mission. You are equipped with the wrong weapon. Your buddy has a silenced assault rifle which is much more appropriate for the mission. The high calibre sniple rifle you are given has a high level of zoom which makes it impossible to use in close quarters, or stealthily, which is what you need to do to win the mission You and your buddy are seemingly subjected to ACR budget cuts and get a SKIMPY amount of ammo... It is not clear how to use the laser target designator. It seems to target the vehicles in the camp you just point in that general direction until the magic square turns green Calling in the arty cannot be really done from a safe range. This is a bit crazy, IRL the spotter would call off the arty strike, or call in the co-ordinates for a delayed strike or CAS given how bloody close you have to be to the camp to ID it. The camo and ghilie in the summer environment looks great... especially with SweetFX Getting spotted through foliage continues to be a problem whereby you cannot possibly have seen the enemy before they see you. I recommend using an AI mod like ASR which makes AI less accurate (more realistically so).
